A nightmare.

It has to be. Maybe, I'm still at the hospital. I'm sleeping and recovering. And when I wake up, mom and dad will be right there in the room with me. The first thing I would see is their eyes round with concern. Just me and them. No men in the woods. No raging fires.

Right?

I blinked.

It can't be. Please, we didn't do anything to deserve this.

I tried again.

Please...

I closed my eyes for a few seconds, then allowed them to flutter open.

Wrong.

The soft ground beneath my feet, the trees whizzing by me, the twigs scraping my skin, the sturdy logs I had to climb over, the dirt beneath my nails, and the distinct scent of nature and smoke invading my nose.

It was all real.

The fire destroying my life,  the girl holding my hand in a death grip and the men.

John, with the breathtaking malice coating his words.

And Kane.

I gasped, taking a long gulp of air into my burning lungs.

Kane, whose mere presence was threatening. Enough to know that he was someone-

No. Something I needed to stay away from.

I don't know how long it had been since I ran into those men. Weaving through the trees took way longer than it would have with the pathway that led into the residential area. It felt like I was running for forever. Everything seemed to get lost within these woods, even time itself.

We kept going.

The farther we went, the further my heart hurt.

My life wasn't perfect... but it was my imperfect life. My imperfect life with my family.

My heart hurt for the loss of it; for I knew, that things would never be the same again.

But we kept going, and going.

For a while now, all that was heard in these silent woods was the sound of my clumsy steps and rapid breathing. Yet the girl remained anxious; she never once stopped pulling me and with my hairs standing on end, I knew we weren't safe either.

Something was off. I couldn't place my finger on it, but I knew we couldn't stay in the woods.

So we kept running, running and running.

Until finally, we made it through the thickest part of the woods.

I started to pick up on hints of life as the trees started to thin out. The murmurs of people talking and doors slamming.

We sped up our pace.

The trees became more scattered. Eventually, I was also able to make out brightness- street lights. We were close to the residential area behind my house.
