Give this story a chance it’s different and won’t disappoint :)

Photo on the side is of Lizzy Caplan (Aly Finnan) as Amy Burley in True Blood :)

Note: Don is the modern male version of Damsel. Damsel was orginally a unisex term but modern society has associated it with females.

I could feel my breath getting shallower and I knew I’d need my puffer soon but I couldn’t stop, wouldn’t stop running. If I did, I’d be finished.

Just around the corner and I’d be safe, those men wouldn’t be stupid enough to go back to the site now that the police had be called, but unfortunately for me, I am.

I jumped over the small hedge, twigs scraping up my arms and made a sharp right into an underground tunnel that would loop back around to the ‘scene’. It was dark and unless you were walking really slowly and paying attention to your surroundings very carefully, which the men pursuing me weren’t, then you would miss the opening all together.

Dropping down into the tunnel I ran as fast and quietly as I could. Right, left, left, straight, first opening, second opening, score.

Climbing the dirty rungs of the ladder I exited the tunnel into the dark alley cautiously.

The alley was deserted except for the hunched over body on the ground.

“Hello? You have to come with me quickly. Before they come back.” I whispered at the body.

There was a muffled grunt and the person shook and tried to move.

I helped the man back to the opening in the tunnel and led him down carefully, flipping the latch behind me so no one could get in.

Police sirens sounded and I could hear the cops examining the scene, the blood, sweat and spit, looking for the scattered gang members.

“They can’t have gotten far. I want you to do a perimeter search, circle out.” I heard one of the officers tell his comrade.

I waited until I was sure only one or two police remained; unlocked the latch and continued through the tunnel taking the turns that led to my street. A third of the way there, I had to stop. Carrying a full grown man was no easy feat for an 18 year old girl.

It was dark and I could barely make out his profile in the shadows. “Thank you.” He whispered.

“Anytime. Come on we have to keep moving, my house is about 800 metres that way.” I replied with a smile.

Using my spare key from under the mat, I unlocked the house and the porch light turned on. “Mum? Dad?”

No answer. I sighed and put my key on the small bench next to the door. There was a note on it.

Aly,

Gone to Martha’s. Jason is in hospital again. Your Father has flown to Melbourne for a business meeting.

Don’t make a mess.

Mum

“Come in.”

He entered my house and I got the first good look at the man I had rescued. My breath caught in my throat. This guy was hot, bruises aside. He didn’t look much older than me, maybe twenty-two, twenty-three, he was tall, around six foot two with brown hair with natural blonde streaks and a natural tan.

“Thank you, but I must go.”

“Nonsense. Let me get my first aid kit. Sit.” I pointed to the lounge in the lounge room and ran up to my room to get the stuff I would need.

Band-aids, bandage, disinfectant, cotton squares, medical tape. It helped when your mum was a nurse, no shortage of supplies around the house. On my way back down I caught a glimpse of myself in the big gilded mirror on the stairs. My long brown hair was knotted in every direction and had beads of sweat glistening in it; my cheeks were a dark red from running compared to my dark tan skin and my green eyes held worry, fear and excitement?

I shook it off, ran my fingers through my hair and brought the supplies to where he was waiting on the edge of lounge I had pointed to.

“Calm down. You’re safe here. You got a name?”

“Jasper.”

“Hey Jasper. I’m Aly. Don’t worry, my mum’s a nurse I’ve done this countless times.”

“What, pick up strange men, covered in blood from a pack of scary thugs, taken them to your house and played mum?” Humour danced in his eyes and I gave him a smile.

“Face this way.” I turned his face into the light and winced. “You really took a beating.”

His right eye was bruised shut, he had a gash on his left cheek, what looked like a sprained finger on the left hand and a dislocated shoulder.

“Hold still.”

I popped his shoulder back into place and he tried not to flinch, but I saw his face pale. However he did wince when the antiseptic touched his cut. I gave him a small smile laughing to myself as I finished cleaning and covering his cuts, put some Bepanthen antiseptic cream on his eye and taped his two fingers together.

“There. That should help heal you in no time. Word of advice maybe you shouldn’t hang around dark alley’s anymore. Those men looked pissed.”

He chuckled.

He stopped laughing and gave me a serious look.“Thank you, but I really must go. Be careful.”

I felt my face drop. I didn’t want this beautiful stranger to leave, he sparked my interest.

“Would you like a meal? It’s no trouble really, my parents aren’t home and I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to leave alone while it’s still dark.”

He agreed, but only after I insisted.

We ate the pasta I made in silence until he was finished. “So tell me Aly, what was a gorgeous girl like you doing alone in that alley tonight?”

“So tell me Jasper, what’s a handsome man like you doing alone in a dark alley, besides getting the shit beaten out of him?”

“Touché. You intrigue me though, you don’t know me I could’ve been dangerous.” He took a sip of water. “Yet you ask no questions.”

“I’m curious, believe me, but one must not seek answers out, when they are ready the answers you want will find you.”

With that I got up and took the plates to the sink leaving him to ponder my words.

“Thank you Aly. For your hospitality and everything but I really must be going now. I will be careful.”

My heart sank and the mysterious Jasper’s figure retreated through the back door and melted away into the night.
