"I uhr..." He clears his throat and picks up the engagement ring from the couch before he turns to me but still refuses to look at me. "Congratulations." He says before he throws the ring at me which I catch.

"Thank you." I mumble and slide the ring down my finger.

"Good guy?" He asks.

"Amazing guy." I smile but all he does is keep his gaze fixed on the glass table, still refusing to look at me. "Liam, why are you here?" I ask him after a long pause. "Is this something to do with my attack? Because that's over now." I say when he doesn't answer.

Liam glances at me, still refusing to look at me right in the eyes before he stands up and walks towards the window. He reminds me of one of those FBI agents in the movies, dressed in suits with long brown or black jackets that hit their knees, hell he even has a hat on.

"Alex won't like me being here." He says. I don't say anything and watch him drink his coffee as he looks out the window. "I heard about your attack. Alex was working on it." He tells me.

"I saw it on tv." I mumble. "I had no idea that the FBI were working on my case." I add.

"We weren't." Liam shrugs. "We don't solve cases like yours. Alex decided to take on the case himself and since he's head of our department, he got away with everything. He didn't get suspension or anything." Liam explains.

"But why did I have to go and identify the men?" I ask.

"Because, Alex beat that man to confess. He did it the illegal way. He threatened him and beat him until he confessed." He shrugs.

"So he confessed because Alexander made him..." I say slowly.

"Alex dropped the case." Liam says as he looks out the window. "Alex dropped everything. He found the guy when you were in hospital." He adds.

"So why did they get arrested after such a long time?" I ask. "I was in hospital for around three weeks and then in recovery for another month so why weren't they arrested already?" I add.

"Like I said, he dropped it." Liam shrugs.

"Dropped it..." I say slowly.

"At first, yes he was working on the case. He beat that guy bloody until he admitted to the crime. Alexander was even going to take that bastard to jail but then he stopped when he got a call from Gayle." He says and turns to face me.

"W-what?" I stutter. His name still gives me the chills after all these years.

"He talked to Gayle and suddenly, he dropped everything he was doing." He says as I look down at my lap and push back my emotions. It goes quiet for a few minutes. Liam keeps his gaze locked on me as I keep mine locked onto my lap. "I tried to tap Gayle's phone, Tessa." I hear Liam sigh.

"Wait, you believe me?" I ask in disbelief and look up at him.

"I tried to tap his phone but Alex caught me and he has a close eye on me so...I didn't get to listen to his phone calls or find out if he did...What you said he did." He says slowly as he rubs the back of his neck. "Gayle is like a father to us." He says making me sigh.

"I don't want to hear this, Liam." I shake my head and stand up.

"I don't understand why he would do what you said he did when he looked at you like his own daughter." He says as he follows me to the door.

"Yeah, well neither do I.' I mumble and pull open the door. "I need you to go, now." I swallow the lump in my throat and walk out into the foyer.

"I'm not leaving." He shakes his head as he follows me. I pull open the front door and face Liam.
