Chapter 1 - Run and don't look back

Start from the beginning

"Dawn! Can you come down?" Aunt Sarah's yell echoed from downstairs.

"Coming!" I yelled back. I glanced at the time. 7.00a.m. I got ready, took out a dagger made out of wood from my drawer and put it in my bag before going downstairs.

I went downstairs with a faintly smile on my face. I couldn't resist smiling at my Aunt and Stephen eating breakfast, talking with mouthfuls of pancakes. I guess they're the only ones who can make me smile.

"Morning Dawn! Hurry and eat before the pancakes get cold," Aunt Sarah said, smiling and pointing towards the pile of blueberry pancakes.

I sat next to Stephen and ruffled his hair, "Hey kiddo!"

He gave me a deadly glare. "I told you to stop calling me that, and stop touching my hair." He arranged his hair nicely again and continued eating grumpily. Well, I know for sure that someone's in a bad mood.  Even though he's always continuously telling me to stop calling him 'kiddo' because he's not a baby anymore, and saying, "I'm already eight!" I couldn't resist.

I was playing with my food before eating it. "Any plans?" Aunt Sarah looked up at me and asked. I thought for a moment. I couldn't possibly tell her that I was going to hunt down some vampires and kill them.

"Since you don't have any plans-" Aunt Sarah said but I hurry cut her off before she finishes her sentence.

     "I do!" I exclaimed.

"Well, whatever," Aunt Sarah rolled her eyes, "Eventually you need to know your new neighbor, so-" I couldn't help but cut her off again before she continues. I guess it was rude, but I have to clarify first.

     "New neighbor?" I questioned.

"Yes, Dawn, if you could just let me finish. As you can see, our old neighbor moved out, and that house has been abandoned for years, the wall paint has been peeled, the front door is rusted, and Stephen even said he saw a ghost but of course, he must be too tired until he's hallucinating stuff-"

"I saw it!" Stephen said, waving his hands up in the air.

Aunt Sarah gave him a look before she resumes, "The whole place's a mess, so the people decided to rebuild the whole thing, and yeah, long story short, the family which is our new neighbor now, bought the house."

Aunt Sarah thought for a while and added, "Well, not completely a family since there's only a boy and his Aunt."

     "So..?" I trailed off.

"So, please hand this to them." Aunt Sarah said, but before I could ask what she was talking about, the basket of fruits was placed on the table, directly in front of me.

"Why can't you hand it to them?" I immediately whined. I didn't want to involve in this kind of matter, I don't like to be that kind and sweet girl with a fake smile on her face.

"Stop whining, you need to talk to them sooner or later, please, Dawn." Argh, maybe I like it better when we didn't have any neighbors, and the place was all run down. It was sure better than this.

"What about you?" I found myself saying.

"I have done my job yesterday, now it's your turn. Plus, it's not like you're going to dance in front of them or something, it won't take long." Aunt Sarah stated, shoving a small piece of pancake in her mouth.

I didn't want to do it, but I sure didn't want to start arguing with Aunt Sarah as well. Aunt Sarah was dead set on me handing the neighbor the fruits and introducing myself. I'll just obey. Even though I didn't want to do it, I have to. I mean, even so, how bad could it be?

I immediately regret saying how bad could it be? Because you know when you say that sentence, it usually turns out pretty bad? I finally gave in. "Fine," I frowned, and Aunt Sarah's face lit up, the complete opposite of my expression.

"It's alright!" Aunt Sarah reassured. "Our neighbor is nice, even the boy."

"What happened to his parents? Why are there only his Aunt and him?" I asked curiously.

"Well, from what the Aunt said, the boy's real parents had left him, and after I heard that, I didn't want to ask any questions anymore. I didn't want to pry. But isn't it sad?" Aunt Sarah said with sympathy in her voice.

Yes. I said silently to myself. It's as sad as me. This conversation had reminded me of my mother. I could feel a sharp knife going through my heart. It hurt. I wanted to cry, I wanted to let it all out, but I never did. I was the strong girl and nothing will let me be weak.

"Dawn!" Aunt Sarah's voice came to my hearing and my thoughts were shattered. I didn't even realize I'd been called several times.

     "Sorry, what?"

Aunt Sarah looked at me suspiciously and sighed. "You completely zoned off, anything wrong?" I shook my head and stood up.

"I should get going," I told her, and she agreed. I carried the basket of fruits while she helped me open the door as my hands were preoccupied. You have no idea how big the fruit basket is.

Cross my fingers and hope that the neighbor doesn't make small talk.
