Amber gave a smile and walked out of her room. She checked her purse for money and her phone. Then, with a few backward glances, she left her house. She called Matty as she walked to the bus stop at the end of the road. She had arranged for him to pick her up yesterday after she had talked to Alex. He seemed incredibly distracted on the phone but Amber planned to find out why on the way to the restaurant.

She spotted his bright, orange car from the other end of the street. He pulled up in front of her.

"You need help getting in?" He asked.

Amber mutely shook her head. She shoved her crutches into the car before she climbed in herself. If was awfully cramped with the crutches beside her but Amber didn't complain. She glanced up at Matty and noticed dark rings under his eyes. He had a weary expression on his face as he drove and he looked exhausted.

"Matty, are you alright?" Amber asked, peering at him.

Matty spared her a brief glance before snapping his gaze back onto the road ahead. He stayed silent.

"Matty?" Amber called, feeling slightly alarmed.

He exhaled a long, heavy sigh. "I just have a lot on my mind."

Amber frowned. He hadn't been like this on the phone last night. In fact, he seemed happy. What had happened?

"You're scaring me, Matty," Amber told him. "Please tell me what's going on."

Matty glanced at her again, this time locking eyes with her. His usually bright blue eyes were tormented and pale.

He sucked in a breath and pulled over to the side of the road.

Amber didn't quite know what he was doing but she didn't say anything either. She wanted to know what was going on. She wanted to help him.

Once the car was safely parked up at the side of the road, he turned to Amber and took her hands.

"You know I love you, right, Ambs?" He asked, making Amber frown.

"Yeah, and I love you too. We've been friends for... ever," she replied, squeezing his hands.

"Well, yesterday when I dropped you off at home, I went to Lindsey's house," he began explaining. "You know how serious things are between us. She wants us to get our own place. I told her that I was saving up for university and that I didn't have money to spare."

He looked down at his hands and sighed. Amber stroked his hand.

"Then what happened? Did you have a fight?" Amber asked, with a sympathetic expression on her face.

"She told me that I was being selfish. She said that I obviously didn't love her enough to want to move in with her," Matty told her, still not looking at her. "And then you called." At that statement he locked eyes with her. "I was so relieved that you called. She heard me talking to you. Arranging to pick you up. She... thought that we were having some sort of affair. I set her straight, though."

Amber frowned. Lindsey had always been so nice. Amber would have never thought of her as the jealous type. Whenever Amber saw Lindsey, they had always gotten on relatively well. As for the idea that Matty and Amber were together, Amber couldn't really blame her. They spent so much time together and were so close that it was an easy mistake. Amber loved Matty like a friend. Not quite a brother, their relationship was far too close to be family like.

"She believed me but she asked me to pick over you and her," he said, running his hands through his thick, blonde hair.

Amber sucked in a sharp breath. "Please tell me that you didn't pick me."
