"It's not my fault the machine was faulty." She whispered in a meek voice.
"No one told you to talk!" He sneered, glowering at her.
"Doctor Reiner! Please, I'd prefer to talk to the nurse alone." Amber yelled.
All three adults stared at her. She couldn't help but grin.
The doctor looked offended. "Fine! Find another doctor to help!"
He stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.
Amber exchanged a confused glance with her father. The young nurse cleared her throat looking considerably happy.
"Alright, Mr Riley if you could go and get Amber a cup of water while I ask her a few questions." She told him.
Mr Riley nodded and squeezed Amber's hand. "I'll be in the café. Call me when you're done."
Amber watched as he left the room. The nurse took a seat in a stuffed leather armchair beside the bed.
"Right, this won't take very long, we just want to know that cause of your fainting so we know if there'll be any medication involved." The nurse told her, scribbling something onto the piece of paper which was attached to the clipboard.
Amber nodded. "That's fine."
"I think it's best to get this out of the way... are you pregnant? Women often faint in the early stages of their pregnancy." The nurse told her.
Amber gaped at the nurse. She blushed. "What? No! I'm seventeen!"
The nurse smiled. "Trust me, I've seen younger mums."
Amber frowned, willing her blush to leave her face.
"Right, have you had anything to eat today?" She questioned.
Amber thought back to the bagel she had eaten that morning. It felt like a very long time ago.
"I had a bagel for breakfast and then on the way to the forest I bought a portion of chips." She admitted.
"Alright..." The nurse scribbled some more. "Last question... How are your sleeping patterns?"
Amber gazed at the bed thoughtfully. She remembered the nightmare from last night and shuddered. She'd not had any proper sleep since her mum had died two years ago.
"I have nightmares..." She whispered, feeling childish. "I can't sleep until around four in the morning. I get really tired during the day but I can't sleep."
"How long has this been going on?" The nurse asked, looking sympathetic.
"Eight years now. I dream about my mum. She died eight years ago." She sighed, remembering the nightmare that came to haunt her every night.
"I can tell you now that you've probably fainted from the lack of sleep and exhaustion. It can't have been from the blood loss since you fainted before you ended up with that paint brush in your leg." She told her gravely. "But I can prescribe you with sleeping pills if you'd like."
Amber thought for a minute. "Would it take away the nightmares?"
She hated how childish and weak she sounded but she wanted anything to stop the nightmares. She hated reliving the moment of her mother's death.
The nurse nodded. "Quite possibly."
Amber smiled. "Then yes please."
The nurse smiled. "Then that's settled. You're going to have to stay here for a night so we can get out some splinters from your leg. We would have done it earlier but we didn't you to wake up in the middle of it."
Amber nodded.
"I'll go and get your Dad."
Amber sat back in her bed feeling slightly better. At least the nightmares would stop...
She wondered what she was going to do about her mother's art box. Who was this guy? How was she supposed to find him if she didn't even know his name? Maybe if she went back to the forest...
"Amber, I need to leave, visiting hours end now and you have to stay the night. Will you be alright, kid?" Her father took her hand.
Amber rolled her eyes. "I'll be absolutely fine!"
He smiled and kissed her forehead. "I know you will."
"Love ya!"
"Love you too, kid."
Amber watched as her father left the room. She was never a daddy's girl but they got on well. He had brought them up well and for that, Amber was grateful.
The nurse remerged into the room holding a small cup of pills and a plastic cup filled with water. It was going to be a long night.
