Night time

It's 9:00pm and mom sent us to bed.
« You have school tomorrow » she said.
Lying under my covers at the other side of the room
I look at you, in your blue pajamas
Climbing in your bed, ranting about how bad you wanted
To finish the movie we were watching.

When you're finally settled, I to talk to you about my day.
Even if we were in the same place the whole time,
I want you to know every aspect of it.
I want you to understand : for me,
Having a twin isn't only about sharing the same birthday,
Or wearing the same outfits in different colors.
It isn't all about having to share every bit of air we breathe,
Every lath of wood that form the floor of our bedroom,
Every piece of memory framed on the living room walls.
Because to me, having you is the safest feeling of all.
Whether you're in the bed next to me
Or at the other end of the country,
I know I'll always have you by my side.

It's 9:30pm and you're still awake.
« Are you sleeping ? », you ask.
I hesitate and decide to lie.
I don't want you to feel lonely
When I'm around.
To feel like you're trapped in your bed :
You can always come and sleep with me.
I know it's scary to let the night take over.
To let your mind wander and make up dreams.
'Cause nightmares are dreams too.
I don't want you to be afraid of the dark
When your eyes are wide open.
So, to make you feel safe,
I come up with a story to tell you
To fill up the silence you are so afraid of.
You're shifting and fighting the covers
And soon, I can hear your even breaths
From across the room
Whispering to my ears,
As if to say thank you.

It's 10:03 pm and you're finally asleep.
« Good night. », I say
Like a promise to your now peaceful soul.
