"Kelly?" Sam said, knocking on your bedroom door and poking his head around the corner.
"Hmm?" You mused, turning around to face him from wear you were putting away some laundry.
"Did you here?" He asked sheepishly.
"Here what?" You frowned.
"They're coming back." He explained.
"Who? The Avengers on the mission? But they have hardly been gone for a week! Buck said they were gonna be gone for two weeks?" You asked confused.
"Yeah..." Sam trailed off.
"Oh well I mean I'm not complaining, we will get to see them! That's good! They must've got everything sorted easily." You shrugged.
"Um, not exactly." Sam sighed more solemnly.
"What do you mean?" You asked bewildered.
But then it hit you.
"Wait, they didn't finish the mission did they?" You asked in a low voice full of dread.
Sam shook his head. Nothing was ever that easy.
"And that can only mean one thing." You gasped.
He nodded with a nervous look on his face.
"Who was it?" You asked quickly.

You didn't even need to ask what had happened. You both knew that it meant that someone was seriously injured. If it was minor, they would have stayed. If someone had been killed, they also would've stayed. They only ever came back early if it meant that someone was in danger and this was the only way they could save them.

The look that Sam gave you made you know who it was before he even said. Your gut twisted as the name left his lips.
"It's Bucky." He huffed. "I'm so sorry."
You felt tears pricking your eyes.
"No, it's not your fault." You said hoarsely, trying to hold back tears. "How far away are they?"
"They should be here any minute." He said dully.
"I'm gonna go wait for them." Is all you could manage to get out.
Of course you would feel awful no matter who it was, but this was your Bucky they were talking about. He had been through enough already, he didn't deserve any more pain.
"I'll come with you." Sam said softly as the two of you headed towards the elevator.
"Thanks." You smiled weakly.

Up on the roof it was only a matter of minutes before you heard the incoming noise of the quinjet. In just a few seconds it popped down from above the clouds and came in to land. Your blood ran cold at the thought of the different possibilities that could have awaited you in there. The ground shuddered a bit as it landed on the hard concrete and then Nat jumped out of the cockpit and rushed to the side door. It slid open and instead of people jumping out, she jumped in. Confused, you felt yourself creeping forward a few steps wanting to see, but then Sam's hand grabbing your wrist held you back.
"No, just wait." He assured you.
You sighed, eyes glued to the jet waiting to see your boyfriend.

Finally after what felt like forever you could just make out Nat and Steve clambering out, Nat holding who you could only assume was Bucky by the feet and Steve holding him up by the shoulders. They shuffled along the tarmac in a hurry, struggling to bare the heavy muscled weight of Buck.

You gasped. Well that's a bad start, he can't walk. Just then Sam let go and you went running over to them. You could here Sam close behind you.
"Steve!" You cried out.
He looked up at you and his expression filled with relief when he saw it was you. As you got closer you could see that Bucky was intact, unconscious, or so you hoped.
"Kelly!" He exclaimed as you started walking along side him. "Oh my god. I'm so sorry, I tried to stop it from happening but I wasn't quick enough." He said sadly. "Sam! Go get a stretcher!" He called out desperately to him.
Without another word he sprinted back inside.
"Steve, its not your fault." You whimpered as you looked down at the pale, lifeless face of your boyfriend. "What happened?"
"He was shot down by one of the other assassins, I tried to throw my shield to deflect it but I was too late. It hit him in the chest, I'm not quite sure where but let's just hope its not anywhere dangerous. He passed out pretty quickly and hasn't woken up since. He's still breathing but he's bleeding so much I'm worried he will bleed out if we don't hurry up and do something. I managed to get to him and drag him into cover. He was so confused and out of it. All he said was 'look after Kelly for me' and then he went unconscious. I'm really sorry." He explained solemnly.

That was it. You burst out crying as they laid him on the stretcher. He was unresponsive to the movement. This sounded pretty bad.
"H-how long ago did it happen?" You stuttered.
"Last night. We came back straight away." He stated.
"Alright, well I need to get back to the others." Natasha huffed. "Good luck, I hope he's okay."
"Thanks." You sighed but she had already run off.

You turned your attention back to Bucky as they wheeled him into a room. The doctors didn't hesitate to practically rip his clothes off of him and you were surprised at the amount of blood spilling out of him that you hadn't noticed before. His jacket was practically soaked, it had already gotten onto the bed and you could see it still flowing out of the now exposed open wound. You didn't realise a person could have that much blood in them. The bullet whole was just off centre, slightly to the left of his central chest. You prayed it hadn't done any internal damage. As horrific as the wound looked you just couldn't get past his expression. Eyes closed, skin a pale grey, lips faintly blue and turned down at the corners. He looked absolutely sick. Nothing like himself.

"Bucky." You whimpered and stepped closer to him but suddenly a nurse held you back.
"I'm sorry miss, but we are about to operate. Your going to need to leave." She said in a monotone.
"Wh-what? But I only just saw him? I haven't even touched him!" You cried tugging against her.
"Kelly, come on. Its okay." Steve said dully and picked  you up, taking you out of the room.
"No! No! Bucky! I need to see him!" You screamed and lashed out.
"Shhhh." Steve soothed and placed you down in a chair in the waiting room. "Shhh. Its going to be okay." He kept a hold of you as he sat down beside you.
"What if he doesn't make it?" You sobbed as you leaned into Steve's chest and he hugged you tightly.
"Are you kidding me? This is James Buchanan Barnes we are talking about here. He can get through anything." He whispered against the top of your head and stroked your back gently.

----

It had been hours before you got any news. Considering it was the infirmary in the avengers tower and not just anyone could come here so it wasn't busy you would've thought you would've heard something buy now. Majority of the time was spent with you crying softly into Steve's Captain America uniform against his chest. He stayed with you the whole time. He didn't even leave to go see Sharon. But now, as you sat with your elbows on your knees staring blankly at the white tiled floor feeling empty, you were startled when a doctor cleared his throat in front of you. You shot up and squeezed Steve's hand nervously waiting to hear what the man had to say.

"You can come see him now if you'd like." He stated.
"Is he okay?" You sighed in relief as you began to walk down the hallway.
"Well we got the bullet out. It was only four centimetres away from his heart but luckily his heart is okay. On the other hand, he has two shattered ribs where the bullet hit them and this caused a collapsed lung because the bone fragments punctured it and put pressure on it, but it is stable now. There was severe blood loss and major bruising to the surrounding tissue." He explained.
"Oh my god." You gasped nearly crying again. "Is he gonna be okay?"
"He's not awake yet and we dont know when he will be but that's not necessarily a bad thing. His body needs time to recover. As long as he rests he should be fine. But please realise that even with the help of the super soldier serum he is going to take a while to heal and will need to take some time off." He sighed.
"Absolutely. Thank you Doctor." You huffed as he showed you into the room.

He left you at the door and when you walked in it was just you and Steve. Bucky had an oxygen mask over his mouth and a bag of blood on drip beside the bed but other than that he looked as if he was sleeping. Some colour had returned to his face so he looked a lot healthier.
"Oh Buck." You whispered and crossed the room to his bedside.
"Stupid jerk." Steve said softly, clearing his throat to stop it from cracking. "Your not invincible you know."
You laughed softly at this not taking your eyes off of Bucky. Carefully you brushed a strand of hair out of his eye and grabbed his flesh hand in yours, placing gently kisses all along his knuckles.
"You look so peaceful now but just wait until you hear how long you'll be out of combat." You mumbled.
