He was new. I told him the wonders of our small town. He smiled as his blue eyes shined. I asked who he was and he answered. I listened intently. Then he asked me. I told him, but not everything. I couldn't. I shouldn't. He realized the distance. But he didn't back away. He asked with kindness and softness. I was surprised but answered him. I felt safe too. Like I could trust him. He listened and let me explain. I told him everything. Then lifted my sleeves to prove it. He traced his fingers along the almost invisible marks. Then he lifted his sleeves and said, "Me too." We talked some more but I could still feel his delicate fingers on my small wrist. Before we left he asked to see them again. I obliged and showed him. He smiled and spoke softly, "Promise me you won't leave. And I'll promise too."

I was silent as he pulled my sleeve back down. Then I looked into the ocean of his eyes.
