Dinah rummaged through her closet frantically looking for something for herself to wear. She had her first date tonight, it needed to be perfect. A first date was a special occasion, a memory to never be forgotten as long as you can remember, so it had to go right. It had to go great. It was unexpected, she had to admit. She was gay as a window, and it wasn't hard to come across many gay girls. Boys were like vultures, lesbians were like badgers..if that made sense at all..probably not. Anyway, Normani Kordei, who she had no idea was gay, or bisexual, or maybe she was neither, either way, the girl had approached her randomly in their shared drama class, and asked her out on a date. She was 16 years old and she had not once been asked out on a date, or even been liked romantically, by a girl obviously, boys are like straight animals lurking around, looking for some good sex, so they don't count. It was 5:30, and the girl said she would be at her door at 7:00. Bear in mind, she hardly knew this girl, but she did know that she was gorgeous, and kind. Normani had been seen helping a few people out in drama class with various techniques. She was a nice person it seemed, and that was good enough for Dinah. Besides, the Polynesian was just asked on her first date ever, she was hardly going to be an idiot and decline the experience. Even if it went badly, it was important this event happened in her life. If she was ever going to find love, something she really wanted to do, she needed to take the first step. Dinah found an outfit she was happy with, at long last, and laid it out on the bed as she dried her hair. She wasn't about to ruin her shirt with wet hair. That would just be a disaster. It was hard to concentrate on making the date perfect with the several kids in her house screaming bloody murder and running everywhere, making tons of unnecessary noise. Don't get Dinah wrong, she loved her siblings and her cousins to death, but they could all in varying degrees be extremely annoying and unbelievably noisy. Dinah was now dressed, blaring her music to drown out the sound of her hyperactive housemates. Beyoncé was good for that, amazing artists make amazing distractions. She was adding the last touches to her makeup before she went on to straightening her blonde hair. She dyed it the other day and she loved the colour change, it looked so much better than the experimental red. Normani would be there in 20 minutes and at all and any cost, she wanted to avoid Normani ringing the doorbell. The last thing she needed tonight was for the bell to ring, one of her siblings to answer the door and for her to be teased over the next few days, maybe weeks. No chance, she refused to let that happen. Dinah checked herself over in the mirror once more and took a deep, calming breath before slowly opening her bedroom door and looking both ways for any signs of anyone before she left the room. She needed to get out quietly and unnoticed. But as if on cue, "Where are you going?" Little brat. "Out." She responded simply to the young girl. "Can I come with you?" "No Regina." "Why not?" "Because it's a big girl's thing." "Pleeeeeeeeaaaseee?" "Oh my god you're so annoying, leave it Gina I gotta go." "I'm telling Mom!!" "No the heck you're not." Dinah pulled the small girl back, covering her mouth as she did. "What do you want?" "Bring me back some candy." "What candy?" "Chocolate." Regina grinned. "Mom banned you from chocolate last week after you got it all over your new dress." "So?" "So I'm not getting you chocolate, or else I'll get in trouble." "Get me a toy then." "What kind of toy?" "A lion." "A lion? Where the hell am I gonna get a lion this late?" "I don't know." The small girl shrugged carelessly. "Please Gina, I'll buy you a toy tomorrow, I need to go now." It was 6:55 and she was running out of time to get to the porch and meet her date. "Alright? Please?" She asked hurriedly. Regina thought about it for a moment before mumbling, "Fine." Dinah grabbed her face and kissed the top of her sister's head ecstatically. "Awesome! Thank you!" "I'm just in this for the lion." "Promise me you won't tell Mom." Regina smiled up at her sister. "I won't tell mom." "Good brat, see you later. Love you!" "Bye!" Regina waved over enthusiastically. Dinah rushed out to the porch and opened the door for Normani before she had even knocked. "Hi." Dinah said, a little out of breath. Normani looked her up and down and smiled sweetly. "You look great." Dinah couldn't help but blush. "Thank you, so do you." Normani smiled and looked at her feet, presumably blushing too. Great start. "So where are we going?" Dinah asked curiously. "I know it sounds cliche, but we're going to the movies." Normani said cautiously. "It's not very creative I know, but it's all I could think of." Dinah simply smiled. It sounded perfect to her. "I don't mind, a movie sounds great to me. What are we seeing?" Normani looked over at the girl, she couldn't avoid her brown eyes forever. "I thought you could choose." "What if you don't like what I do? We'll pick together." Dinah decided. "Alright, that works." Normani smiled. When the two girls arrived at the cinema, they decided to see a horror film. Both girls had wanted to see the film since it was announced on adverts and billboards. It appeared even more cliche since there was a stereotypical idea of one person getting scared and the other one having to put their arm around them or cuddle up to them to 'protect them'. It was borderline sweet, but it was stupid at the same time. When they got to the desk to buy the two tickets, Normani offered to buy Dinah's ticket, but the girl politely declined and said she would prefer to pay for herself. She was honest. Normani smiled and nodded, she admired that about her. "Can I buy the popcorn?" She asked Dinah, hoping she'd agree to that. She wanted to make a good impression and be chivalrous. "Sure, I'll get the drinks." Dinah smiled at the girl warmly. She was starting to feel more comfortable now. Don't get her wrong, Dinah was still nervous as hell. But Normani seemed to be more of a nice person the more time that she spent with her. They found their seats in the dark and decided to talk a little while the ads played before the actual movie started. "Soooo.." Dinah drew out awkwardly. "Can I ask a question?" Normani asked outwardly. "Uhm sure." "Why didn't you let me even knock on the door or ring the doorbell?" "Well.." "Are you embarrassed?" She asked with a smirk. "I mean, I have a lot of people in my house and they would tease me endlessly if they even got an inkling I was going on my first date tonight." "Awww, this is your first date??" Normani exclaimed. Dinah blushed and nodded. "I've never been on a date, not until now. No ones even taken an interest in me before, like let's be real, I'm not very attractive. Compared to most of the girls in school I'm ugly as hell, you included." "Are you calling me ugly?" Normani quirked an eyebrow. "What? No!" Dinah said impossibly quickly and unintentionally loudly, causing heads to turn and Normani to giggle, which was unexpected. "I was only joking." "Oh." Dinah laughed nervously. How embarrassing. Normani seemed to have more to say though. "And Dinah don't underestimate yourself, don't put yourself down like that. I think you're attractive." "You do?" Dinah couldn't quite believe what she was hearing. "I wouldn't have asked you out this evening if I didn't." Normani reassured. "I suppose not." Dinah half smiled. "Ooh! The film's starting." Normani grinned excitedly. The film was great, the special effects made both Normani and Dinah jump in places, sometimes at the same time, sometimes at different times to the other person. "That movie was actually really good." Normani smiled as they came out the cinema with smiles on their faces. "Did you enjoy it Dinah?" She asked the girl hopefully. "Yeah it was done well." She agreed. She was enjoying Normani's company, though sadly it was nearing 9 o'clock and her parents would get kind of suspicious if she was home too late. Dinah didn't want the night to end, and she didn't know it, but neither did Normani. "I guess I should be getting home now." Dinah said reluctantly. "Of course. I guess it is getting a little late to be out. I'll walk you back." Normani smiled. Somewhere, she didn't know when, but Dinah felt Normani take her left hand and intertwine their fingers bravely. Dinah flitted her eyes down to their hands and up at Normani, who was already looking at her with warm eyes and a soft smile. Dinah smiled back and looked away with yet another rush of warmth on her cheeks. She was a little upset when they had reached their destination but when Normani gave her hand a light squeeze, it just reminded her the date had gone well. "I guess this is it." Dinah said, sadness evident in her tone. "I had fun with you tonight." Normani spoke, trying to raise the girl's spirits again. "Me too." Dinah agreed. "Maybe, we can do this again soon?" Dinah's smile turned into a grin at her words. "Really?" Normani nodded with a smile on her face. "Yeah, I'd love that." "Great." Normani smiled, letting Dinah's hand go, the action had disappointed the girl, but she knew it was going to happen eventually. "Guess I should go inside now." Dinah cleared her throat as silence fell over them and their eyes connected, looking into each other. "Guess you should." Normani said, just as disappointed as Dinah. "See you tomorrow." Dinah said, they had drama class tomorrow. At least she would get to see her again the next day. Normani chuckled with a smile on her face, they couldn't stand outside in the dark forever. As much as they didn't want to part ways, now was the time to do so. "Goodnight Dinah." Dinah didn't expect the next move. Normani leant in and kissed her cheek ever so gently and let it linger for a second or two before she stepped down and waved with her fingers with a warm smile on her face. Dinah was too speechless to reply, and Normani was rather proud to have had that effect on the girl. Dinah found herself waving, but Normani was out of sight so it seemed a little stupid. She was lucky it was dark. She dug out her key and opened the door, she couldn't wipe the smile off her face as she got in the house, got ready for bed and went to her bedroom to replay the events over in her head for the next hour or so. However, she didn't expect to see her father and her little sister sat on her bed, one with a stern look and one with a devilish smile. "You little shit!" "Dinah!" Her father scolded. "You made me promise not to tell Mom, not Dad." Regina said matter of factly. "I can't believe you." She muttered under her breath. "Regina, go to your room so your sister and I can talk please." The little girl huffed and reluctantly left the room. "I miss all the good stuff." "Shut your mouth, get outta here." Dinah pointed out the door and shut it behind her. "Dad-" "I'm very upset with you Dinah Jane." "I'm sorry." She sighed. "I love you kiddo, you should know you can confide in me about these things." Dinah looked up with disbelief. "Wait you're not mad?" "No!" He chuckled. "Did you have a good night?" "It was amazing Dad." She grinned. "I'm glad you had fun. Get some rest now. You can tell me all about it tomorrow." The man kissed the top of his daughter's head as he got up to leave the room. "I love you Daddy." "Goodnight honey." "Night." Dinah smiled back at him until she was alone, and then she smiled some more, because she just had the best night of her life.
