The Skin of My Lover

the skin of my lover
is the color of snow
gently resting
on the highest mountain
waiting for the summer thaw
to flow down,
like a river
crystal clear
pure
flawless

the color of sand
is my lover's skin
golden
warm
waving dunes in the desert
or kissing the salt of the sea

perfumed like the rosewood bark
is the skin of my lover
light the shade like oak or pine
native red like cherry and redwood
it's bronzed walnut and cypress
exotic olive
beautiful dark ebony

blue sapphires
are the eyes of my lover
sometimes turquoise
like the ocean deep waters
or heavenly like the sky

glistening onyx
dark, captivating
my lover's eyes,
or the color of clay
or wood
or fertile soils
sweet like caramel
and brown sugar

exquisite emeralds
are the eyes of my lover
intense,
like the greenest forests
soft like moistened grass

the hair of my lover
it's like ripe corn
golden oath under the sun
sometimes the shade of honey
or dark like the magic nights
or wears the silver crown
of age and wisdom
it's free, unruly,
or sleek and tamed

my lover...
his heart marks the rhythm
of my breathing
his blood
-red blood-
-like my blood-
pulses to pairs mine
sometimes soothing
others frantic
beneath my skin
beneath our skin
