Chapter 16

Ryder’s POV

I couldn’t believe it when the great and almighty Jezebel fell asleep during her own enforced ‘thinking time’. But I guess I should have known, things are never as they seem when it comes to that girl. No sooner had her eyes closed, then she started to glow with a faint golden hue. It made her hair turn a rich and smooth chestnut colour. What really made me catch my breath was that the golden hue made Jezebel look like an angel fallen from heaven. Her face remained impassive while the glow increased in brightness.

Josh and Chase noticed quickly also, not surprising with the sudden golden light filling the darkening room. Chase looked confused, but Josh looked a Jezebel with a look of pure affection, love and admiration. I couldn’t help but be in awe too. In that moment glowing in a golden haze, Jezebel looked like an avenging angel peacefully sleeping. Josh’s expression was quickly dashed and replaced by a look of utter concern.

“Jezebel? What’s going on?” Josh called to her, getting out of his seat and starting towards her.

I stayed where I was content to watch other people deal with the evolving situation. That and I could feel the power saturating the air around me like fog in the form of golden smoke. It was pouring off of Jezebel. I had this gut feeling telling me that it would be unwise to try and disturb someone with that much power.

“I don’t think you should touch her,” the words seemed to tumble out of my mouth of their own volition.

Josh stopped about a metre short of where Jezebel sat and turned to look at me. He opened his mouth to say something, probably something snarky or rude, but before he got a word out the atmosphere in the room changed. The air itself seemed to get thicker or heavier and the temperature dropped startlingly. For a moment nobody moved and nobody breathed. All eyes were on Jezebel who was still soundlessly asleep but was also still glowing like a light bulb.

Chase broke the silence, “Yeah I think Ryder’s right on this one Josh. Don’t touch her….maybe just wait and see what happens.”

I allowed myself a smirk in Josh’s direction as he cast a worried look at Jezebel before turning to go back to his seat. The three of us then commenced to watch Jezebel for the next 20 minutes while she slept all the while her golden glow shined strong. I was staring off into space when she finally woke up. I knew because two things happened at once. First the golden light suddenly cut off and secondly I saw her move out of the corner of my eye.

The room stayed quiet as Jezebel became aware of her surroundings. She flushed and smiled sheepishly when she realised we were all watching her.

“I know what we’re going to do,” was all she said.

Her brow creased as if she were deep in thought and didn’t elaborate from there. I shot a questioning look at Josh who was staring intently at Jezebel. He seems quite fine with waiting for the supposed answer she had come up with while asleep. I couldn’t help but wonder whether his willingness to wait for her answer was a sign of faith or Josh just being whipped. I discarded the thought and decided to get answers myself.

“Well are you going to share you brilliant idea or just leave us all in suspense?” I demanded.

She swung her eyes around to face me and there were still traces of gold in them. It made her face seem ethereal and it sent a shiver down my spine. She paled slightly when she looked at me and momentarily seemed lost in her thoughts before she replied.

“I’m going to undo the spell that was put on you and change you back to the age you should be,” she said in a calm matter of fact tone.

I knew my eyes widened and my mouth dropped open, but what can I say, that idea had never occurred to me. At all.
