(A/N: This is set sometime during their senior year of high school. I hope y'all like this! Let me know what you think! As always, leave any ideas or requests you have! Thank y'all for reading! (Also, side A/N... Who's excited for the season premiere coming soon? I know I am. It's going to be awesome to see them tackle high school. Alright, I'm done. Bye!) )

I was sitting in the back of math class with my headphones in and my sketchbook out in place of a calculator just waiting for the bell to ring. Riley was next to me. "What's up?" she asks me as I finish up the drawing. A heart on fire.

"Nothing," I say shrugging my shoulder. I smile and she smiles back. "Okay." Finally, the bell rings.

"Hey guys," I hear someone say as we walk out of the class.

"Hey Farkle," Riley says. "Oh, hey guys," she adds. Oh no.

"Hey Riley, Maya," Zay responds, but Lucas stays quiet with just a nod of his head. He and Riley have been broken up for over a month, but it's still weird around the two when we're all hanging out. Lucas feels really bad about it, but there's nothing he can do about it until Riley comes around. We talk for a couple of minutes before Riley looks at me.

"Hey we should get going if we want to make it to the mall before closing," she says.

"Yeah, let's go," I say before telling the boys we'd see them Monday.

---

"Hey Maya, I have this awesome song I want you to hear!" Riley says after she comes out of the bathroom. I'm sleeping over tonight, and it's getting pretty late so we're both in our pajamas.

"Go for it," I say.

She presses play and I listen to the beginning lyrics. It's by some girl named Sabrina Carpenter who Riley says looks and sounds just like me, but I don't see it.

Oh, our love is running into a burning building
Oh, our love is scattered ash with a burnt up feeling
Feel the heat so we started running
You know you saw it coming
But the memories are still in my mind
Burning like smoke and fire

The song comes to a close and Riley looks at me for my reaction. "What'd you think?" she asks enthusiastically.

"That was really good Riles," I say back as she smiles. And I'm not lying, it was really good. I just wish it wasn't so real. "So what next?" I ask trying to get the focus off of the song.

"Wanna watch a movie?" she asks me. "Yeah, sounds good," I say.

---

Riley fell asleep about ten minutes into the movie, but I was still wide awake thinking about that song. Sometime after midnight my phone starts vibrating. I smile when I see the picture ID. I answer and whisper a quiet, "hello?"

"Hey babe," he says on the other end of the line.

"What's up?" I ask, careful not to wake the sleeping Riley.

"Just wondering if you wanted to meet up for some ice cream. There's a new place down by where you are that's open until two am."

"Yeah sounds good. Riley's asleep so I'll meet you at the bottom of the fire escape in ten minutes."

"Awesome, see you then."

I quietly get up out of Riley's bed where we were watching the movie and go to her bathroom. I quickly change into some ripped jeans, black ankle boots, white baseball tee, and a black leather jacket. I give my eyeliner a quick flick and then put on some mascara. I tease the waves in my hair, and smile into the mirror. All set. And good timing too, I'm at nine minutes and counting. I tip-toe back into Riley's room and step closer to the bay's open window. I put my headphone in and press shuffle on my phone. The song that comes on? Smoke and Fire, the same one Riley had me listen to earlier. I turn around when I hear the crash and fire that signifies the beginning of the song and see Riley sleeping peacefully. She won't wake up anytime soon. But it's still not fair to her.

The song plays through my ears as I descend from the third-story window.

Secrets in a small town, they always get around
But the flame has been put out
And I am hearing all the small talk
They whisper as I walk
In a house that's bordered up
So good luck

I'm no firefighter
I just need to breathe tonight
So sound the alarm
And there goes the night

Oh, our love is running into a burning building
Oh, our love is scattered ash with a burnt up feeling
Feel the heat so we started running
You know you saw it coming
But the memories are still in my mind
Burning like smoke and fire

My feet hit the ground as the song ends. The song pins it perfectly. My love is running into a burning building, I can feel the heat, and I know I can see something bad coming, but I don't do anything to stop it as I reach down and grab his hand.

"What kind are you going to get?"

"Um, probably chocolate," I say tightening our fingers.

"You're so boring," he jokes with me.

"You're so boring," I joke back, hip bumping him as we walk down the block a little further.

"But I love you anyways Maya," he says.

"I love you too Lucas."

Sound the alarm and there goes the night
Burning like smoke and fire
