Zay's POV:
"Please man, I can't take this anymore."
"Lucas shut up. It's three in the morning and she's asleep. I'm not going to wake her up so that you can apologize for something she shouldn't forgive you for in the first place," I say back into the speaker.
"Lucas, you were a jerk," Riley adds in behind me. She and Farkle had woken up at the sound of my ringtone as well, but Maya was laying on top of Farkle, so he stayed behind with her. Riley was currently chewing Lucas out with me. "Do you really think as her best friend I'm going to suggest that she talk this out with you? She's hurt enough. Do you know what she told me? She said she should've seen this coming. She said that people she allows close to her like that always disappoint her. She can't trust you anymore."
"Because I was a jerk to her. I know why, but you can't tell her," Lucas says, and we can both tell he's been crying.
"Really, lemme hear whatcha got," I say turning up the speaker volume.
"I'm moving back to Texas. I don't have a choice, my dad made the decision. I thought that if I made her break up with me, it'd be less painful," he explains.
Woah. Riley and I exchange looks of confusion. "Well how did that go for you?"
"Not good. I decided I needed to tell her. Maybe she'll forgive me?" he asks.
"I don't know. You really disappointed her. On her birthday."
"I move in three days, that's why I've been ignoring everyone. Especially her," he interrupts. I look at Riley. Maya's like my sister. I love her and want her to be happy. She'll obviously forgive him, but he caused her a whole lot of pain. "Please, I need to-,"
"No you don't, I just need you here," Riley and I hear from the doorway. I hear the phone click off. He hung up. Farkle and Maya come sit on the bay window.
"I'm so sorry peaches."
"We thought we were protecting you," I say.
"You were, thank you," she says. After a minute of silence, she looks at me. "He deserved the harsh comments you told him, Zay," she says resting her head on my shoulder and laughing.
"Anytime Maya," I tell her. We are both startled by a knock on the window. Farkle opens it to reveal a panting Lucas with red cheeks. I knew he lived close to Riley but wow.
"You ran," Maya says standing up.
"Of course I ran," he says holding her hand. "So you heard?" Maya nods. "I'm sorry. I just couldn't find it in me to tell you."
"It's okay Lucas," she says placing her other hand on his cheek. I realize that she calms him with a single touch. That's power. "We're going to work this out. The odds have been stacked against us for as long as I can remember our friendship and relationship. We've always conquered them. This time won't be any different," she says leaning her forehead on his and dropping her hand. Their breaths are mixed and heavy, and I see Lucas grab her cheek instead.
"I love you," I hear him whisper, on the verge of breaking.
"I love you too," she says. He leans down and kisses her softly on her pink lips and I smile while crossing my arms. Their first kiss.
"AHEM," I hear two people say from behind me. I turn and see Farkle and Riley in the hallway, not even watching this beautiful moment.
Maya pulls away from Lucas reluctantly and he just watches her like a hurt, lost puppy. "Um, Zay, I love you too but can you just," she says trailing off towards the end.
"Oh, right. Congrats you two," I say jumping up and running back to Farkle and Riley. We walk down the hallway and they put their arms around me.
"You are so weird," Riley says giggling as we try to go back to normal from this crazy night. Maybe we can sleep. "But it's sweet. I'm glad you're around for her."
"She needs all three of us sugar. Now that idiot back there too. But thank you, it's part of my charm," I say batting my eyelashes at her, getting another giggle in response.
