Standing in the doorway of my dorm was a dark curly haired, pale skinned boy.Yes, a boy. My mom would kill me if she knew that I had a boy in my dorm on the first day.

"Hey, Edith here," he asked like he totally didn't just technically break into my house.

"Umm, no" I replied.

"Well, when she gets here, tell her Asher said call her," he said annoyed.

That's when I started to become mad. How is he just going to come in here unannounced...wait how'd he even get a key into my room?!?!

"How'd you get a key into my room," I exclaimed out loud.

"...my girlfriend lives here...and she gave me a key...," he said as I if I were slow.

"I'm sorry, but nobody named Edith lives here, my roommate's name is Summer, and she hasn't even gotten arrived here yet," I said, getting more agitated by the second.

"Wait, you mean this isn't room 9D?"

"No, it's 9E, you're on the wrong floor."

"Oh, well nice meeting you-"

"Naomi" I told him.

"Noami, hope to see you on campus soon."

"Yeah you too, Asher" I grumbled. I had no desire to keep talking to the boy who had broken into my room on the first day. After he left I shut the door, and made sure it was locked. There was really no point of doing that because my roommate came not even five minutes later.

"Oh my gosh," I yelled, running up to Summer. " I'm soo happy to be meeting you in person, finally."

She gave me a great big bear hug and said, "Yeah you too. I thought you looked good on Skype, but dang girl, you are hawt!"

"You too," I complimented, taking in her apperance. She had deep, glowing skin like mine, and had long curly hair. It was weave, but I knew her natural hair was really long after the many Skype calls we had though out the summer. She was short, but was fit, and had curves in all the right places. Her dimples and wide, almond shaped brown eyes made her even more adorable.

"Here let me help you with your bags," I said, grabbing a few. She didn't have much being as though she already lived in NYC. Soon we had all her bags out of the hallway and into our room.

"So, how is it living in New York?" I asked Summer.

"Umm, I don't know, I've been living here all my life. It's gorgeous and I wouldn't choose any other city to live in. Yeah, the people are a little rough around the edges, but you'll get used to it soon."

"Sounds nice...so have you had anything to eat yet?" It was 12:00, and the last time I ate was around 4. My stomach was starting to growl.

"No, have you?" Summer asked.

"I mean, my mom took my to Dough, and we ate doughnuts but-"

"Oh my gosh Dough?!" she laughed, "No that's a tourist attraction. Let me show you were the real food is."

-----------------

"Thanks for the ride!" I told the taxi car driver as I slammed the door shut. Summer had taken me to some soul food type of restaurant, however the outside didn't look appealing, at all. The inside looked even worse. The workers stood behind a kind of table you'd see lunch ladies at a high school serving food at. And the food... didn't look kosher at all.

"Oh my gosh, girl. I kow what you're thinking. I can see it all over your face. Trust me. This food is the bomb.com"

"Well, if you say so..." I said nervously. I had always been a picky eater when I was growing up. I never had the "stereotypical black people food" such as pigs feet and hog mog. I grew in a predominantly white suburban neighborhood and went to a predominantly white high school. I wasn't the only black girl there, but there also weren't many of us.

I let Summer order and pay for her food first, she got smothered chicken with red beans and rice. To be on the safe side, all I ordered was fried fish and potato salad. I paid for my food and we were on our way back to the dorm.

I broke off a small piece of fish, and nervously placed in on my tongue.

An explosion of flavor filled my mouth, and a small moan escaped my lips.

"This is... AMAZEBALLS!!" I yelled. This time I tried the potato salad, which was just as good, if not better, than the fish.

"I told girl, this mess is good." She replied.

This time, I tried a piece of fish, layered with potato salad on top.

Have you ever had food so good that you had no choice but to get up dancing? Well, that's how that food tasted.

I got up and started doing every dance in the book. The running man, the worm, heck even the dab.

As I was dancing, Summer started dying of laughter.

"Girl, stop!" She laughed, "you're just too much. I can't breathe!"

I stopped dancing, and laid on the floor holding my stomach from laughing too hard. That's when we heard a loud knock on our wall, our neighbors probably, telling us to shut up. This only made us laugh even harder. Soon there were tears streaming down both our faces, ruining our makeup.

After we recovered from our giggle fit, we started getting ready for bed, being as though orientation started at 10:00 am sharp and it was already 1:15.

Soon Summer and I were in bed. She fell asleep before me, snoring lightly. I stayed awake, staring at the ceiling and thinking about how much my life has changed over the course of 24 hours.

I left my childhood home and my mother.

I was now living two hours away from home.

I had a new awesome roommate that would make this year worthwhile.

I smiled at myself, maybe this year wouldn't be as bad as I thought. I grabbed my phone and sent my mother a goodnight text.

My eyes started to droop as I felt myself falling into a deep slumber.

All of a sudden, I shot up out of my sleep as realization dawned on me. Asher had never given me that key.
