"C'mon mom, hurry up, or else we'll be late!" I yelled up the stairs, carrying my last suitcase. I ran out the door, almost tripping. I chucked my suitcase, it was only full of my underwear, into the trunk of our old mini van, and hopped in the the front seat.

While waiting for my mom to get in the car, I opened up my compact mirror and checked my hair and makeup one last time.

My freshly done box braids laid crazily around my face, after all I was just loading in all my belongings that I was taking to my new dorm. Luckily, my makeup was still in order. Well, what little makeup I had on. My drugstore mascara wasn't the best, but it was the most practical for a day like move in day. My eyebrows were filled in though, I would never leave the house without doing that. I had no concealer, foundation, or whatever you call that mess on. Of course my skin had marks and bumps, but I could never find the right shade. All the beauty products were either too dark or too light, and even when they did match they broke out my skin. I wasn't too sad though. My skin was dark, and had a nice radiant glow that only came naturall-

"Noami," my mom breathed, cutting my thoughts off. "Ready to rock and roll?" I smiled at her as she slammed her door shut. As we drove off, I watched my house, my childhood home, fade off into the distance until it was no longer visible.

"Here are your keys, hope you'll enjoy your stay here at NYU as much as we'll enjoy you attending." I smiled at the nice lady as I took my keys and unlocked my door to where I'll be calling home for the nine months.

Being the dramatic girl I am, I opened the door very slowly.

"C'mon Noami, I haven't got all day," my mother said jokingly.

"Haha, mom you know you love me," I said, opening the door more quickly now.

My laughter stopped as soon as I seen my dorm.

You know those youtube videos with those girls showing us around their totally cute dorm rooms? Well, mine did not look like that, at all. The walls were made up of sad, dingy drywall and the floors out of old raggedy carpet. So far the college life was not living up to its expectations.

"What's wrong sweetie," my mom asked, as she seen the tears swelling up in my eyes.

"Nothing ma," I lied, "These are just tears of joy."

"Well, come on and let's get these bags in this room," she said, grabbing one of the largest suitcases. "I got a hot date, with my bed." She shook her hips and winked at me.

I laughed, savoring these last few hours I would have with her until she left back home for New Jersey. We unpacked all my clothes and school supplies together making sure everything was organized and in place. We also hung up fairy lights and cute Polaroid pictures, like the rooms you see on Tumblr.

Before, I knew it, it was time for her to leave.

"I'll miss you so much," I said as I sobbed into her shoulder. I know most kids my age hate their parents, but my mom was really my best friend. We did everything together. We painted nails and talked about boys. Yeah, I said boys. My mom was just one of those people you could really just sit down and pour your whole heart out to.

"I know I'll miss you too," she said, stroking my long braids. "Just rememeber, I'll always be here for you. I'll call you as soon as I get home." I nodded and wiped my tears away. I gave my mother one last kiss before she left back for our hometown.

When I was finally alone in my dorm I padded over to my window. I now lived on the highest floor of the building, but that really didn't scare me that much.

I looked down on the big city, otherwise known as New York City. So far the only thing I liked about this room was the view. I always dreamed of roaming the streets as a New Yorker, and now I was one. However, staring down on the thousands of people who were off on their way to work, I never felt more alone. My best friend had just left me, and my roommate wasn't scheduled to arrive until about 8 p.m. It was only 5.

I was already all unpacked and my mom had taken me out for a quick meal. I decided to lay down and read on wattpad to pass the time.

"He stepped down, trying not to look at her as though she were the sun, yet he saw her, like the sun, even without looking," I said aloud, crying and screenshotting that quote. 'Gosh, sometimes I get wayyy to emotially invested in things,' I thought to myself. But who doesn't when they're reading books on wattpad?

Before I knew I it, the old door handle rattled, signaling that someone was opening it. I glanced at the clock, 8:05.

I stood up and smoothed out my wrinkled yellow tee, getting ready to greet my roommate.

Only it wasn't her.
