Max ran. Down flights of stairs, through hallways, down corridors. He had no clue where he was going. DWMA was completely new to him. Navigating through it was a mystery. He heard his mother's footsteps behind him, and behind her, the sound of Medusa's hexes being deflected by the Shinigami's scythe.
A hand gripped his shoulder. He instinctively tensed, but relaxed slightly when he realized it was his mother. Still running, she leaned forward and whispered in his ear, "Turn left. There's a side door that should take us out into the city streets. When we're out, just keep running, and hide. Don't wait for us. Just hide."
Max nodded, and sped off to his left. Sure enough, there was a door, and, wrenching it open, he found himself standing in one of the streets of Death City. He kept running, as his mother had said, until he couldn't hear the sound of her running behind him.
