Xavier's pov -

Everything was silent for a moment. This silence gave me goosebumps, the type we get when we are at the center of a cemetery surrounded by gravestones.

We were mortified when we heard a gunshot. Nobody dared to utter a single word. Then we heard a gasp. All of our heads turned in the direction and saw that Ana's face has gone pale. Her next words took our breath away.

"She was shot."

Before anyone can say something I sprang into action. I turned to Daimen and told him to come with me. I also ordered the rest of them to stay here and be prepared for my next command we can't risk exposing everyone.

What If, her mate arrives and asks questions? A lot of people at the scene will only raise his suspicion. They agreed that this is the right thing to do.

Without wasting another second Daimen and I sprinted in the direction from where the sound of the gunshot was heard.

When we came to the clearing, I saw a guy running toward a rogue aiming for his neck. He oozed power. I glanced toward Daimen and gave him a slight nod. He too returned it and raised his brow in a suggestive manner.

He went for the other rogue and me for our alpha. She was lying there in a pool of blood, looking lifeless. I knelt down beside her and took in her battered form. I knew she was alive as we haven't lost our connection to her. But her pulse was faint. She was shot in the stomach. I prayed to the moon goddess for her quick recovery and carefully lifted her in my arms.

I started to move away. We need to get back to the pack quickly. I have only taken a few steps when I heard a growl, a warning growl to be exact. I knew that it was from her mate. But I also know what a douchebag he is! So I simply turned and growled back.

"Stop! Where are you taking her?" he snarled.

"To her pack." I spat.

"You can't take her away from me. She is mine." He roared.

"How can she be yours? You just saw her a few minutes ago." Daimen said with equal hostility in his voice.

"She is my mate."

I scoffed. Mate.

"Her mate died a few years back don't fool us."

"No. I am- Leave it. Look my territory is near and by the look of it she needs quick medical attention, mate or not." He smirked.

He was right. Her pulse was barely there and to top that she was not healing quickly which was strange to me. So I nodded and Daimen and I started to follow him to his territory. I also mind-linked the rest of our group to head back to our pack. We will take care of the situation and will keep them updated. It was hard as Ana was not listening but when I told her that her staying here will only increase the risk of exposing us she reluctantly agreed to it.

The whole way to his pack house I was observing him with a hawk eye. His body was stiff and many times his eyes fogged up which meant he was mind-linking. He also stole several glances at her. Was he trying to be a worried mate? But I knew better. He was eyeing the exposed flesh from where her top was cut by those filthy rogues; the curve of her breast was on display.

Daimen too, saw the lust swirling in his eyes and quickly discarded his shirt and covered her body to stop the visual assault. I was still carrying her in my arms heart filled with worry when I felt like I was losing contact with her.

I looked at Daimen to confirm my suspicion. His eyes also held the same worry as he too felt her slipping away. This was bad and getting worse. I voiced my thought and we quickened our pace.

We had just entered the packhouse when a girl out of nowhere jumped at him and started kissing his face like he was her food and she was starving forever.

She started to rip his shirt and I could tell that she hasn't even noticed us and this was going to get r- rated. But This rascal was smart. He pushed her away and shouted for her to stop the nuisance. The girl was confused and started to say something but then closed her mouth. I noticed that both of them were mind liking and after a few seconds, she smirked. With fake sincerity, she apologized and left.

Did they think that we were stupid?

He dismissed her and apologized on her behalf. When we reached the room I carefully settled her in bed and stood aside. The doctor was in motion as soon as she touched the bed. He started asking questions about her, Daimen and I opened our mouths to answer but the bastard beat us to it and answered smugly saying that he knew her better than us.

He told him that she does not have a wolf and was her lost mate. Daimen and I were laughing silently. Her wolf was rare and we knew that she was special. Dr. Russell said that he needed to remove the bullet and poison from her blood and we should wait outside.

We stepped outside the room and took that as an opportunity to introduce ourselves.

"I am Xavier head of the warriors and he is Daimen beta of our Redwood pack."

"Zen, Alpha of Silver Shine pack." He shook my hand a little strongly to show his dominance but it felt like nothing. I smiled a little just to rile him up.

"So what were you doing in that jungle? Don't you know it is dense and dangerous plus free land? And how do u know her?"

It was time to tell the lie with the conviction of truth.

"We were going to our pack. She was with us. We didn't know when she got separated. We heard the sound of a gunshot and sprinted in the direction. When we reached the place, we saw her lying unconscious on the ground.

The Luna of our pack found her washed up at the shore in our territory some years back. When she was fit she joined our pack instead of leaving."

He wanted to ask something but shut his mouth as his eyes glazed over. He apologized that he has to leave. An urgent matter came up that requires his immediate attention. We can freshen up and wait for further news from the doctor in the room adjacent to the medical room.

We nodded and said that it was okay. We will tell him about her progress the second doctor came out. We understand that Alpha has lots of duties. After he left, Daimen let out a hollow chuckle. I turned to him and raised my eyebrow.

"You know that his urgent matter is to fuck that girl we saw earlier, right?"

"It was as clear as a day. The lust was clearly evident in his eyes. But you have to praise him for one thing."

"And that would be?"

"His acting skills. The perfect facade he put up in front of us as a worried mate was worth a clap."

"If we weren't aware of his past we might have missed the devilish and uncanny looks of his eyes. He knows how to play his cards. But he is underestimating us which is a good thing."

"We will keep an eye on him. But Xavier, right now I am more worried about Kira. This didn't go as planned. I don't know how she will react when she wakes up. What if she-"

I cut him mid-sentence. "Don't worry. I have full faith that she will wake up soon. We all know that she has a brain and knows very well how to use it."

"I too have faith in her but you are more confident about it. Are you hiding something from me? Yesterday too when she fainted your reaction was out of your usual behavior. And when she told her about this mate of hers you lost it, man. Do you like her or something?"

"You know me, right? So relax. There is no one who does not like her. And you know that I am a bit extra protective of her."

"I know. Let's hope that she wakes up soon."
