Chapter 10; The Both of You

[Recap: After running for hours on end, the group encounters an old man who warns them of an upcoming storm that results in the loss of not only half of the gladers, but the disappearance of Isabella]

Isabella was bleeding.

Her arm had been sliced but who knows what, and not only had the wound slowed her down, but it left a trail of blood that the others could potentially follow. In all honesty, she didn't really care if they did though. By the time they would reach her, she would have already arrived at Luke's, and knowing him, the guy would kill them without the mere bat of an eye.

Bella hissed as she clutched her arm, the burning sensation almost unbearable. The wound was from her shoulder to her wrist, most likely from a glass shard. It hurt like a bitch, but Isabella didn't dare whine as she made her way into the city. Right now, she needed to survive. She needed to find Luke.

Bella walked for hours on end until she finally found what they called home. On the outside, the building looked abandoned and crushed by a large piece of cement, a characteristic that kept cranks from entering most of the time. Even if they did enter though, they had a system that kept them from their main headquarters.

Bella was forced to duck under the make shift spears until she made her way to a very paint chipped door. She could easily hear someone inside, and when her fingers turned the knob and pushed, her eyes met Luke's.

"'Bout time you found your way back," he exclaimed, hand holding a knife that was currently carving a point at the end of a stick.

Bella furrowed her brows because of his cold tone. That was new. "What do you mean?"

Luke stopped carving, "I mean that it's about time you finally escaped their hold. I was betting earlier but this will do."

Isabella, still clutching her arm, stepped backwards when the boy stood up. He seemed different. She could tell. His eyes were more sunken in and his hands were shaking as she held onto the make shift weapon. "Are you alright?" Bella asked him, voice laced with caution.

"You know," he began, twirling the new spear, "I can't believe you fell for it that easily. I knew you weren't smart, but I didn't know you were that stupid."

Bella's heart almost stopped, "Luke, what the hell are you talking about?" She asked, voice shaking. Something was wrong.

"I worked for Wicked, and I still do. The whole plan was for you to try and kill Wendy, as I told you before, Newt hated her in the maze. And he did at one time, but not anymore."

"I knew they were in love, and it's so pathetic how quick you were to believe that he actually hated her. Just because they had their memories wiped doesn't mean that the feelings wouldn't resurface soon enough. After all, he did love her before the trials."

Bella stumbled backwards, back hitting the door. Every word he said was like a stab to her stomach. She covered her ears, but even then, she could still hear him.

"The reason why I let you go is so you could ruin any chance with him ever again," Luke whistled before tossing up the spear and catching it again, "He thinks you're a monster now, and the best part is, you're not. But his view on you will never change."

Isabella gulped, "Stop."

"Now that he knows for sure that you are now alive, but a stone cold bitch," he smiled, "the results for the trials will be excellent. You did in fact almost set them off track, which is why you were exiled in the first place. Wendy cleaned up your mess, and now with you out of the way, that'll just add to the success of getting a cure."
