Chapter 2 - Upside Down
[Recap: a group of men and women guide the last Gladers into a building where they are given food, water, and shelter, not to mention a proper bed. Wendy and Teresa are separated from the boys due to their gender for sleeping arrangements, Wendy of course sneaking back into the boys dormitory to sleep to Newt after having trouble sleeping. Later, when she goes back to her room with Teresa, she is awoken by two needles being struck into her neck before she becomes unconscious]
–Newt's Point of View–
—
Newt had gotten a bloody good scare after the cranks attacked the windows in their room the next morning, but what scared him most was the fact that Wendy or Teresa hadn't come to their room when all of the chaos started. He waited for her, his eyes darting back and forth as all of the Gladers tried to escape the current room they were in. But the door was locked, well, until he himself was passed a red cylinder to break open the door.
After a couple of tries, he did, soon tumbling slightly into the room that separated the boys dormitory from the girls.
"Are we sure we wanna go in there?" Frypan's voice echoed, eyeing the darkness in front of him. "Maybe the door was locked for a reason."
Newt immediately snapped his eyes at the cook, "Wendy is on the other side. Who knows what could be going on in that room. Every second we wait is a second that Wendy or Teresa could be in danger. We're going in." he spoke lowly, his voice contorting as he thought of the idea that Wendy could be hurt or dead.
All of the Gladers eyes snapped at the commander, looking at him with shock as his words came out harsh and rushed when it came to the brunette's safety. Minho nodded, agreeing with him. "I'll go first."
Newt sucked in a deep breath before following, diving straight into the inky darkness right after. Newt followed Minho, his hand slightly on the boys shoulder before he stopped abruptly when Newt heard a loud smack.
"Be careful." he said loudly, "Something...weird's hanging from the ceiling."
Newt frowned, then realizing that an odd smell was now being emitted into the room. Soon, a slight squeak or groan as if something was swinging sounded to his right. The blonde covered his nose as the smell grew even stronger as he walked forward. He kept walking until his hips met something solid. He grunted and heard people ask what was wrong, and the boy sheepishly smiled in the darkness when he felt the smooth surface.
"Tables." he mumbled, "Watch out for tables."
Frypan then spoke up after, "Does anyone remember where the light switches were?"
Newt's eyes blinked as he hit something else, "That's where I'm heading." he responded, leaning more towards to the left now after he ducked under whatever he hit. "I swear I remember seeing a set of them somewhere over here." Newt said as he kept walking, hearing his friends bumping into more things before he found the lights and shouted, "Found it!"
His fingers flipped the switch and light that shined as bright as the sun beamed into the room instantly. Newt flinched, covering his eyes until they adjusted, and that's when he heard gasps. The boy snapped his head up quickly, and he felt his heart drop in his chest when he noticed the problem. The things they were bumping into and hitting were people. They were bodies. Dead ones, and not only that, the bodies were of the people that had rescued them yesterday.
