Chapter 5 - Forcefield

[Recap: Now amongst their various problems, the remaining gladers struggle with finding food and water to consume now that their saviors are dead. With Wendy now knowing that Minho and Newt both have feelings for her, Wendy's feelings become jumbled from her lack of memories, not knowing that the past would be resurfacing soon]

If Wendy could cry, she would, but she didn't have the energy or water supply to do so in her case.

It was a constant pain, like as if an animal were chewing away at her stomach, her throat, her entire body. It was the worst feeling she had ever felt, even worse than the numb pain she felt from her loss of memories.

"Wendy, hey. Wake up." she heard someone coax, but the voice was so distant that she simply shook it off. With the pain of not eating for days finally taking over her, her five senses were almost cut off, but then she felt someone shake her and repeat. "Wake up, Wendy."

She grumbled in response, trying her best not to move as she opened her eyes ever so slightly. She could see an abundance of blonde hair above her, and finally, the very soft yet sharp looking face that belonged to Newt came into view.

"There's food now. Here, love." he said softly before raising his hand. Her eyes followed the movement, and soon she spotted something red in his pale fingers. Wendy's eyes widened more than they ever had before at the sight of the polished fruit, and in seconds she shot up and grabbed it from his hands. She devoured it in seconds, Newt chuckling at her when she handed him back merely a stem that held no more fruit to consume.

"Bloody hell, woman." Newt laughed, standing up and then resting a hand on Wendy's arm. "C'mon, there's more food in the common area. And, we've got something to show you."

The slight hesitant in his voice already made Wendy anxious and wary as he helped her stand up and walk to where everyone was. What could he possibly show her that could make him nervous?

Finally, Wendy and Newt made their way into the room that every glader seemed to be residing in. At first, she noticed nothing wrong, absolutely nothing other than several teenagers devouring food and talking amongst themselves. But then she saw it, and immediately she rubbed her eyes because maybe she was just seeing things because she was tired, or because she hadn't eaten and was hallucinating at the moment. But then Newt gestured towards what she thought was a hallucination and said, "Wendy, meet Ratman."

What she saw before her was a very confusing sight for her to say the least.

A man was sitting by a desk, dressed in all white and reading a book like it was the most causal thing in the world. He seemed slightly old, thin black hair combed over his pale head and a long nose that was slightly crooked, easily being one of the reasons as to why the gladers were already calling him Ratman.

"The hell?" Wendy mumbled, slowly walking forward towards him. Just as she was about to reach him though, she felt someone pull her back, forbidding her from taking another step forward. She slightly twisted her head back to see Newt, the boy slowly then walking forward and bringing the hand he held in front of her. Suddenly, she felt her hand meet a solid wall, an invisible one just inches from where she was standing. "Wow." she mumbled.

"Invisible wall." Newt mused, bringing her hand down but not letting it go. "He's been here for awhile, told us that he'd speak when he was ready. Protected by it apparently."

Wendy furrowed her brows as she flickered her eyes over to Newt, "You know, for this being very odd, I'm not surprised." she confessed. "I'm not surprised anymore after the whole maze thing being retold to me. Plus, looks like anything that comes from his mouth seems like bullshit anyways so I'm not really excited to hear what he has to say."
