"Don't Blink" she whispered close to his ear in passing, before turning and sauntering towards the brick building her first morning class was in. She was dressed a bit differently than the other girls here, not too wild, but compared to the general girl's population of yoga pants and t-shirts, her black bomber jacket and ripped, black skinny jeans drew his eye.

Snapping back into reality, sure he was new, and with that came learning every new person's name he encountered. But...her name was even different. Something he'd never heard before.

Leaning over to the short, blond boy who he'd been forced to share a dorm room with, he motioned to the retreating girl's figure. As they both watched her walk away, he couldn't help but ask, "Why is her name Blink?"

"It's not her real name, just a nickname that stuck over the years." Carter replied instantly, his gaze finally snapping over to Justin.

She was gone then, finally disappearing into the main building of the boarding school. It was the typical boarding school scenery— Red brick exterior, fresh cut grass for acres, and dozens of evergreen trees due to the surrounding forest.

Justin couldn't help but notice the far away look in his roommate's eyes as they occasionally flashed back to where the female had disappeared. "Why are you looking after her like that?"

"Ever since I've known her, she always does this disappearing act," he shrugged. "Sometimes I wonder if it'll be the last time." The boy chuckled shortly.

Justin still didn't understand.

Sighing, Carter gestured to the building just to their left. They were going to be late to their first class of their first day if they didn't start walking. He didn't miss the look in Justin's eyes either.

So, he elaborated. "Her parents were junkies. They would always skip town to get the next fix they needed. One day she'd be there and the next she was gone. No one knew where she would go or if she'd even be with her parents at all. She'd be gone for weeks and then bam!" He clapped his hands, getting a few looks from the kids passing by, who opposed to his and Justin's pace, didn't seem in that big of a hurry.

"She'd be back, like nothing changed."

"I don't get it," Justin laughed a nonsense laugh. "She had parents that would drag her out of town, so what?" He shrugged, holding the door for Carter as it gave access to another long hall.

"You don't get it. And you won't get it until you're around her enough. It's freaky" Carter threw him the typical 'poor rookie' look as he grabbed the door to their first mod of the day.

"It just became a thing around here." Justin blinked, seemingly lost when Carter jumped started their conversation all the way back to the beginning. "When you part ways with her, even if it's just the end of the school day, you don't say goodbye, you say 'Don't blink'".
