Soon enough, they had begun running towards the town, Minho's plan on running until they were dying being put into motion. She didn't mind though, especially since her legs seemed to work perfectly fine with running long distances at a fast pace. This continued on until the world had finally seemed to cool down and had transformed into night, the horizon now black and dark. Wendy enjoyed running in the slight darkness, her ears listening to everyone's feet punching against the dry Earth, and truly, their journey was going well until they heard a girl scream.
Like that, the Gladers and her had stopped running, halting to a stop at the sound. It was a terrible noise, the sound of it so eery that Wendy felt her head began to pound.
"You know what that reminds me of?" Minho asked, and Thomas answered about it being Grievers, but when the Asian and Newt made eye contact and transferred their gaze to Wendy, she immediately knew that the sound had once come from her in the Glade just by the way they eyed her.
"What now?" Thomas asked as the girl continued to scream.
"I think we should take a break." Minho said, and Wendy sighed in relief. "Fill our little tummies and drink up. Then we should book it for as long as we can stand it while the sun is still down. Maybe get a couple hours of sleep before dawn."
With a smile, Wendy slowly departed from the group and placed her bag on the floor, immediately opening her water bag and gulping a portion of it down, then chomping down on a granola bar before extending her legs out with a relaxed gaze.
She looked up at the sky above her when she laid her head down, seeing the barley visible moon past the dark fog of sand that still swirled in the air. She could hear in the background as she daydreamed that everyone was doing the same, eating, drinking, and then laying down to rest. Soon enough, she no longer heard rustling, at least until Newt appeared above her and then brought his body down to lie next to her.
"How you holding up?" Newt suddenly asked, head lying on his pack as he turned it towards her.
"Doing okay." Wendy answered honestly, eyes roaming the dark void above her. "Despite the mess of things, I'm doing okay. You?"
"Could be better." he snickered. "Agreed though, I'm doing bloody alright for now."
Wendy laughed quietly before she finally looked over at the blonde to see that he was still staring at her. "Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked when she noticed that his brows were slightly furrowed and knitted in confusion.
"Just thinking." he muttered, "'Bout you, 'bout everything really. That and you're just really beautiful."
Wendy, at this, frowned. How in the goddamn Earth did she look even close to beautiful? Her face was littered with sand, fingernails cracked and hands stained with dry dirt and burns from the sun. The only thing that seemed slightly normal was her hair, the strands down and waved out from the wind that blew their way, but even that was a mess.
"Sure." Wendy responded sarcastically, but secretly her stomach was doing summersaults. "Like I believe that."
Newt scooted closer as a response, face now inches from her's. She could feel his body heat radiating towards her, his hair almost tickling her face. Wendy could feel her stomach churn and chest leap when his hand made it's way to her hair, fingers brushing away strands that threatened to fall in front of her. She gulped throughout all of this, the yearning to be near him filling her yet again. She wanted so desperately to kiss him, to be as close as possible to the blonde glader. Wendy was beginning to accept the fact that she still had feelings for him, just barley, but Wendy continued to try and refrain. But she couldn't resist it when he outstretched his arms for her to shift into.
Even though her mind fought against it, Wendy did so.
She slowly turned over so that her back was facing his chest and then entered his embrace, the arms she so desperately craved being wrapped around her frame as they laid their heads on their bundled up sheets. She felt Newt's left hand grab her's, intertwining their fingers as Wendy curved herself into him.
And like that, it was as if her world had started spinning again, just like when Newt kissed her.
Slowly, but ever so softly, Wendy fell asleep in the blonde's arms, the glader soon falling asleep too as the rest envied their relationship of having someone by their side.
Of course though, it had to be ruined when two hours later she was yanked from his grasp in one rough and swift motion, not even having enough time to register what was going on before a knife was pressed to her throat.
"Hello, Wendy."
