Amber could tell she was trying to conceal her excitement with a matter-of-fact tone. She also noticed how Saf didn't look at her until they had changed the topic.

"That is amazing," Amber answered with a grin. "They'd be crazy not to hire you."

"What's it for?" Saf asked, after noisily clearing his throat, and fixating his gaze up the label of his water bottle which he was ripping to shreds.

Zora shook her head. "Oh, it's just a small catalogue. Nothing huge."

Amber rolled her eyes amusedly at Zora's composed replies. "Oh, come on. You're allowed to freak out about this, Zora! You've wanted to be a model since you were a child!"

Zora allowed herself a small smile but it widened as Amber began asking for details. Saf remained quiet, pretending to be disinterested. Amber knew better.

Lunch passed too quickly for the trio's liking.

Amber and Saf made their way to English whilst Zora went to her French class.

Amber loved English. Despite her passion for reading, she'd never read many of the classics in her own time. They had been asked to read Great Expectations by Dickens over the summer and Amber had thoroughly enjoyed it.

Saf sat next to her in English, making it easy for them to pass notes, whilst Mrs Beckett began her start of the year lecture about the importance of re-reading the books that were set for the exams.

Amber wrote the first note.

So, Zora modelling... how crazy is that?

She slid the folded piece of paper across the table and drove it into Saf's elbow a few times to get his attention.

He frowned at her in confusion before subtly taking the note and opening it. Mrs Beckett was too busy writing up the names of the texts they were reading on the board to notice the frown that appeared on Saf's face when he read the note. He hurriedly scribbled something back and shoved it in Amber's direction without looking at her.

She curiously unfolded the note.

Yeah. Crazy.

Amber gazed at the side of Saf's smooth brown face. His thick eyebrows were furrowed in what she knew was fake concentration at the list on the board.

You don't look happy about it.

When she slid the note in Saf's direction, he chose not to look at it. Amber placed it pointedly on his notebook and waited patiently.

She watched as his resolve broke down and his eyes fell on the note. There was a flicker of a grin on his face but it was gone so fast Amber wasn't sure if she had really seen it.

Mrs Beckett was now handing out copies of Great Expectations to anyone who didn't have one. Saf waited until she had returned to her desk and taken a seat before sliding the note over.

I'm happy. Look.

Amber frowned at the note in confusion and reread it but it didn't solve anything. She glanced at Saf for help but she had a manic, sarcastic grin etched on his face.
