Amber laughed and gave him a shove. "Go away. I just fainted and I was holding a paintbrush."
Saf didn't look any less confused. "That's not physically possible, is it? The force that it would take to shove a paintbrush into your leg..."
He trailed off with his eyes fixated on the door. Amber followed his gaze to see Zora stride confidently into the classroom, her hips swinging from side to side as she did so.
Zora was one of the most beautiful people Amber had ever met but over the summer, she had somehow grown more radiant. Her rich brown skin physically gleamed under the lights of the classroom, sometimes it would look more red than brown when the sun shone directly onto it. Right now, it was the exact shade of coffee beans. Zora always had a new hairstyle every month while at school, sometimes her aunt would sew in a new weave for her and other times she would have a short natural hair relaxed and it would just about reach her chin. For the start of the new year, she opted for liquorice black ringlets which sat like perfect springs around her angular face. She used a bit of bronzer to bring out her already prominent cheekbones and wore bold winged eye-liner which made her eyes look a warmer shade of brown.
Saf didn't say another word until she sat down.
"Hey guys." She greeted them with a wide seal-lipped smile which fell off her face when her eyes caught sight of Amber's crutches. "Oh my God, what happened?"
The class seemed to have hushed at her loud squeal. Amber tried to disguise her blush by pretending to look confused while checking the time.
"Could you have drawn any more attention to me?" She sighed.
Zora bit her lip. "Sorry, I just wasn't expecting to see crutches."
"Yeah, she was just telling me what happened when you came in," Saf interjected, seemingly having found his voice again.
"I fainted. In the woods." Amber watched amusedly as their faces grew more confused. "I was out there painting and I passed out."
Zora gasped dramatically. "How long was it before they found you? I think I heard about you on the news."
Amber rolled her eyes. "There was this other guy there at the time. He took me to a hospital."
Saf snorted a laugh. "Wow, Prince Charming saves damsel in distress. What a cliché. Did true love's kiss heal you?"
Zora shushed him impatiently. "What happened Ambs? Was he hot?"
Without warning, Amber felt a blush rise onto her face. She wished she could have kept the part about Alex to herself, but it was too late.
"Oh. My. God. You totally think he was hot," Zora sat back in her chair, satisfied with the story so far. "Did you get a name? Did he slip you his number?"
"Oh, I got more than that," Amber answered, eyes fixated on Saf's coat.
"Eurgh, you put out? Was it in the hospital? Prince Charming must really be something," Saf inquired, with a look of mock-disgust.
Zora caught Amber's horrified expression and burst out in her boisterous laughter. Soon, they were all laughing with her.
Mrs Bellerose walked into the room, carrying a pile of paper and her laptop. She was a kindly woman who had been taking the register for their class for the past six years. She was there for any personal issues one of the students would have. Amber leaned on her a lot at the beginning at her time at the school. Despite it being two years since her mother's death when she joined the school, Amber still found herself seeking support. Mrs Bellerose was the perfect maternal figure whom she sought comfort in her younger years. Now, Amber respected the woman for having so much patience with the weepy girl who lost her mother.
