"I heard that" Tayte said, we smiled,

"You can do whatever it takes to feel better. But you will feel better, believe me, because I've been to the darkest place possible and even there, there is some light"

"If I haven't told you already, I love you so much and couldn't ask for a better older brother"

"Oi" Noah said, she laughed,

"You too of course" Tayte cleared his throat, she rolled her eyes, "Your still not forgiven" Noah and I laughed, I kissed her forehead and she got up, she was walking past Tayte when he grabbed her, she squealed, causing an older couple who sat in front of us, to look over in alarm,

"Nothing to worry about" Noah announced grinning and then, "I wonder when food will come, I'm hungry," I shut my eyes, Arii coming over had made me forget about the pain, but it was back in full force.

The aching was in my bones, and it was horrible, because I couldn't get at it, I felt like I needed to squeeze and scrape it to stop it hurting. The muscle pain was in second, the piercing sensation was like a blade being dragged up and down my leg. I was about to tell Tayte I really wasn't doing very well when an air stewardess came round saying that dinner would be served in the next 5 minutes. I wasn't hungry, I felt that if I ate I wouldn't be able to keep it down,

"Mustard chicken served with mushrooms and onions on a bed of creamy herb mash" Noah said once it had been plated up, "Yummy"

"Would you like a glass of champagne sir?" a stewardess asked me,

"Yes thank you" I said, "A large one please" I then said quietly, she smiled,

"Of course sir," she wondered off and asked everyone else in the section. I picked up my fork and attempted to fill it with some chicken, I noticed everyone else tucking into their dinner, Tayte caught my eye, I half smiled and then turned away, putting the small piece of chicken in my mouth. I felt like I was chewing on a piece of gum, at the stage where it was hard and stale,

"Here you go sir" a voice said, I gulped down the chicken and took the large glass of champagne,

"Thank you"

"Is there anything else I can get for you?"

"No thank you" I lied, she smiled and left me alone, I sipped the cool liquid, then again attempted to have another mouthful of food, it took longer to swallow than the first and by the end of it I'd downed the whole glass. I looked over at Tayte 15 minutes after food had been served, he caught my eye, "Help me" I mouthed, he shot up out of his seat and came over,

"Talk to me" He said,

"The pain is unbearable, it's eating me up inside. My bones, my muscles hurt so much Tayte. I just want the pain to stop. Please just make the pain stop"

Tayte's POV

Fear struck me like lighting when Keane said those words to me, there was no doubt about how much pain he was in, you could easily see that. We were thousands of feet in the air on an airplane though, probably the worst place to be,

"I'll make it all okay Keane. Just keep fighting and then I'll make the pain go away, your going to be fine. Do you hear me" He nodded, "Noah, Arii, come here" They came over, they didn't need to ask what was wrong, by just looking at Keane's pained face it told them all they needed to know, "I'm going to get some help, stay with him and keep reassuring him he'll be okay. Take his mind off the pain" they nodded and I stood up, looking to see whose attention I could get, I headed to the front of the section,

"Are you okay?" the elderly couple sat together at the front said,

"No, my brother's in severe pain. He needs something, but it's so complicated what he can and can't have. He needs medical attention now, so we can make it to Dubai for our connecting flight"

"I'm a Consultant of Medicine and Anaesthetics. I can help him, tell me what and everything I need to know" I nodded and set about explaining the crucial information about Keane.

"Keane, there's someone here to help you okay. You listen to him for me"

"Okay" He said,

"Hi Keane. My name is Joe and I am going to help you, but you have to be honest with me and stay calm, can you do that for me?"

"Yes" Keane replied. Our section of the plane was closed off and air stewards and stewardesses were on hand to help and provided us with everything we needed. It was lucky that Joe had his medical bag, he said he always took it with him, for medical emergencies and since he was still a practiced consultant and has been for 40 years he never had any trouble getting his kit on planes.

"I'm going to give you something to ease the pain"

"No morphine"

"I know, your brother has told me. Anything I'll give won't cause you any harm or counter affect the chances of being addicted again"

"No injections, please no injections" Keane said, I knelt by his side,

"Keane it's not..." I began,

"I don't want an injection" He said,

"That's fine, no injections Keane. There are many other ways to do this, you just have to work with me" Joe said,

"It just hurts so much"

...

All in all the situation was handled and under control within an hour, though we still had 3 hours left until we landed in Dubai. Keane was sleeping and seemed to be in no discomfort. I think I'd thanked Joe and his wife a million times and they just smiled and said, that they'd do it again in a heartbeat and wouldn't think twice.

We had a 4 hour layover in Dubai, this was where Joe and his wife would leave us. As already said, I thanked them again, we all thanked them and Keane who also apologised for the inconvenience. All the flight staff sent us with best wishes, which was a nice touch. It took a while to get us through security. Keane's leg being the main problem, not the cast or crutches, the metal pins that were in his leg! So when we were finally through, Keane was pissed but was trying to come across as if he wasn't. It was 9.30pm and everyone was hungry again, including Keane who thankfully wasn't in pain anymore,

"There's a wagamama's" Noah said,

"Katsu chicken here I come" Keane said, so it was decided.

Keane's POV

I watched on at my family, at my life. The smiles on their faces, the laughter and glints in their eyes. It was all worth it, the battle, tears, nightmares, the never ending feeling of doom. I knew that whatever happened when we got to New Zealand, when we finally found the final key. That we'd done it and we'd done it together.

We'd done it, as one.
