Chapter 13 - We All Have Gifts

We change into some old clothes left on the island by some other people, eat some food, and take a long nap.  I dream about being chased by Hecca.  I wake up, but my friends are still asleep.  I go for a walk and try to find Treasure.

"I'm sorry that Hecca hurt you," I say.

Treasure answers, "I knew that I would have to face Hecca some day.  It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."  I look at the bite.  It is now covered with blisters and scabs.  But it could have been worse, a lot worse. 

Treasure tells me about his home at Prairie Star Stables, which offers riding lessons as well as horse therapy for people going through difficult times in their lives.  I am shocked.  Prairie Star Stables is only about 40 miles from where I live!

When the 12 hours are over, Evan wakes up.  His welts are getting better, but his mind is still troubled.  "I am done being a wizard!" he growls.  "This place is crazy!  When I get home, I am going to a real boarding school, without wizards, where I can get away from everyone and start my life all over!"

"Isn't Evan supposed to be cured from Forever's arrow?" Jacob asks.

Wakanda answers, "While Evan was under the spell of Forever's arrow, it was impossible for his feelings to change.  They can change now, but only if he changes his thoughts.  Evan has not had a good experience here at Rainbow Island.  He should be thankful for being safe now, but his thoughts are still focused on the past.  Unfortunately that is the way it is for many people."

"It is so neat how all of the horses here have special powers!" Lizzie says.  "I wish all people had special powers too!"

"All people do have special gifts," Wakanda says.  "But not all powers are magical.  Here on Rainbow Island, the magic horses use their special powers either to do good or oppose good.  Most people with magic powers, or wizards as you call them, have fallen away from their spiritual roots and use their powers to do whatever they choose.  Most people do not have the wisdom to use them wisely, however.  The same goes for non-magical powers.  They are most effective when used the way the Spirit desires them to be used.  Before you go, we will have a special ceremony to honor each of you.  Then you will see what I mean."

"How will we get home?" Kayla asks.  "Forever has taken Evan's wand, so he still can not use his powers unless we get it back."

"Wizard wands can not be used by horses," Wakanda says.  "So most likely Hecca has already destroyed it. Whisper knows how to send you back through the portal.  Treasure, Legend, and Fantasy will all be going home too."

In the evening we sit in a circle around a fire.  Wakanda tells each of us what our special gifts are.   Kayla has the gifts of friendship and optimism.  Jacob has the gifts of leadership and courage.  Lizzie has the gifts of cheerfulness and patience.  I have the gifts of thoughtfulness and adaptability.  Wakanda explains how each of these gifts helped us on our adventure here.  Evan has the gift of determination, and though he is discouraged now, Wakanda assures us that once he learns from his experiences here, he will use this gift again. 

I actually wish we could stay here longer, but I'm sure Caitlin and our parents are all frantic back home.  Home still seems so far away.  I wonder what will happen to Hecca and the rest of the horses who are still with her.  I see something white flying towards us.  It is not a horse, it is a dove.

"It is Muse!" Thunder says.  "And evidently she comes in peace."

"Muse has not been trustworthy in the past," Wakanda says, "And neither have you.  However, I am trusting you now to talk to her.  Then both of you can report back to me.  Please do not disappoint me,Thunder!" Wakanda warns.
