trying to calm the screaming.

desperately trying to settle the monster

They didn't mean anything

They just weren't thinking

But the monster's head is rearing

and lashing out

and people are screaming and shaking me,

someone hit my face,

someone is holding my wrists.

Why won't everyone just stop?

I whisper to the monster

everything's alright

but my voice is too quiet

and no one can hear me under the screaming

and the shouting

and the guilt.

I should have tried harder,

I thought as my eyes started to blur,

as my body starts to shake,

as my breathing starts to falter.

I should have tried harder.

I have to calm the monster,

that's all I ever have to do,

just calm the glaring eyes,

the pointed tongue,

the violent instincts.
