Addiction is not only an obsession of something that you could not help
Or that you were dragged into
Or a bad habit
But something you have an unknown desire for,
Something you crave,
A good reason for wanting

Say, for instance,
That lady down the street
Could be addicted to cigarettes
Taking away minutes of her life
One puff at time
But she couldn't care
Because it takes away the pain
And that's all we humans ever wanted
To take away the pain

Say for instance,
That teen down the street
Could be addicted to music
Being transported to another universe
Where you are not judged
Where you feel like you belong
Where your troubles could melt away with a single chord of a guitar
Or the cooing of a gentle voice

Say for instance,
The girl sitting right next to me
Could be addicted to a nostalgic love
Feeding off of the memories that had once been alive
When she was happy
When she was herself
Because she knows now,
That she could never have that again

You see, we're all addicted to something
And there's no way to get past them
We all feed off of objects and people that make us feel better about ourselves
And that's how it's always gonna be
