As I looked at her I recognised her- she was familiar.

"Hello" the woman said.

It was a simple word. A word of greeting but it gave nothing away. It didn't tell us if she hated us or liked us... it was just her saying hello.

"Hello" I said back, warily "I'm sorry, do I know you?" I asked

The woman's face changed then and a smile broke her previously mysterious aura

"Yes, dear, I believe we met a few weeks ago- you asked me about a family?" She started

She looked down as she started routing through her purse

"A family?" I repeated

"Yes- the Meyer family wasn't it?" She said as she looked up at us again

I gasped as a smile took over my face

The once uptight and cautious air left me and I smiled at the woman as if she was an old friend

"Yes- we met at the sensor house didn't we?" I asked

She nodded, quickly, with a smile "yes, yes that's it! I work with the records between the 1700s and 1900s. You got referred to me by my colleague"

I nodded

"Yes that's right" I said with a smile

"Well I have been keeping my word Miss and I have been keeping an eye on the Meyer family" she said "so when these new files came in I thought that I would pass them onto you in person"

I smiled at her as I nodded.

She passed me the papers she had dug out of her purse as I spoke.

I glanced at the stack and saw the Meyer family name- my families new name.

"Thank you for that- I just wanted to make sure that all was ok with them- I haven't had a chance to go over to Germany, but I was planning on taking a trip soon. They are... family in some distant way and I think-"

I cut myself off as I looked back at her from the document in my hand.

She held a solumn look on her face.

I immediately closed my mouth.

I knew that look. I had seen it many times in my life- both when I was human and not.

I had seen it when I was 13, when my parents told me they lost their third baby- that I wasn't getting another sibling like I had hoped for.

I had seen it at 24- when the family doctor sat infront of me and told me they could finally give my condition a name- that they had heard of a newly named desease in Europe... when they told me I had cancer.

I had seen it when Lestat told me we couldn't look for my family when I first turned- that I was a newly turned vampire and my bloodlust would be too strong.

I had seen the same look of empathy many times when being told news I never wanted to hear. I knew the look the woman in front of me wore like I was looking into a mirror and seeing the faces that held it before.

"Who?" I asked quickly, my tone changing

The woman tilted her head at me

"How did you know?" She asked

I let out a laugh but not in humour

"I have been told more then once that someone had died or something bad had happened... just tell it to me straight. Who died?" I asked

The woman swallowed before she straightened herself

"Unfortunately there was an accident, someone logged the deceased into the family file so I did some research and... and it seems that your family was targeted- the police said their house was valuable and maybe that was why- but ultimately they didn't find who did it, but... it was a group of people- probably religious nut jobs- that was what was reported. They left crosses all over the house and they wiped the... victims blood all over the walls- I'm sorry I will spare you the details but I wanted you to know that the family is no more" the woman finished

I stood still as I just looked at her

"No more?" I repeated "what do you mean no more?" I asked

"The Meyer family is no more- they are all gone" she said "there were no survivors"
