He rolls his eyes, "I'm texting a chick."
I scoffed out a laugh, "Of course you are."
"Someone jealous?"
"Why would I be jealous?"
"Because you-know-who won't respond to you," he met my gaze with a smirk and I rolled my eyes. I saw him put his phone away and already knew what was coming before he asked, "You planning to accept her terms?"
I answered him with a snarl and he laughed, leaning back against the surface.
"You'll have to if you plan to win," he pointed out, causing my teeth to grit.
"I know. It's stupid," I muttered, causing another laugh from him.
His lips parted to say something more when the door opened and my dad wandered in, pulling at his suit jacket. "You two ready to go yet?"
"Yup, finally. You know how long it takes him to do his hair," Kile chides, gesturing at me. I glared at him and snarled, my dad just laughing at us.
"Alright. Let's get going then before we're the last people there."
We quickly wandered out and down the stairs, meeting my mother and Jason in the kitchen. The two of them seemed to be talking about tonight. I was used to all the formalities that came with being the next Alpha by this point but that didn't mean I could even pretend any of it was interesting. My only hope was that Jeremy would cause something interesting to happen tonight. That kid was always getting into trouble.
"Mat, your collar," I heard my mom say right before she came wandering over, fussing over my appearance. There was an urge to pull away from her but I knew it would just take longer.
I glanced over at Kile and my dad who were watching with mocking looks and rolled my eyes. "Mom, it's fine," I told her but she waved me off.
"There," she finally says, stepping back but then goes to fix my pocket.
"Mom," I complained and she finally steps back.
"Alright, let's... Where's my...?" She goes wandering off, digging through her purse.
My dad sighs with a chuckle, leaning back against the wall, "That woman. She'd lose her head if it weren't attached to her body." I felt a smile fall over my lips as I laughed along. "Jason, I never asked if you'd interacted with any Kados members before?"
I felt my jaw clench as Jason wandered closer. He was some Drifter — a wolf that belongs to a pack but still travels — that my dad was close with but it was over a decade ago they last talked. Now he was here living with us like that lost time meant nothing.
"A little but that was a long time ago and it was just some lower members," he informed and my dad nodded before they fell into more conversation.
My mom finally comes down the stairs and my dad chuckles, "Finally have everything, m'lady?"
She shakes her head in annoyance, "You all could have already gotten in the car rather than waiting down here."
"I figured it was easier to wait in here than sit there for half an hour," he jokes and she narrows her eyes on him. Instantly, I could see his tough act fade as he raised his hands in surrender, "Alright, getting in the car."
Kile and I just laughed, following after them out into the cold night air and to the black car in the driveway. We all piled in, my dad taking the driver's seat rather than having a driver take us like usual. Then we were driving off to meet this other pack in some fancy as fuck hotel.
"Mat," my dad calls and I hummed in acknowledgement. He glances at me in the rear view mirror, "No starting anything with Felix tonight." There was a smirk on his lips as I rolled my eyes and jarringly nodded. Kile snickers next to me, likely knowing I was already planning out ways to piss Felix off.
