Chapter3: What I'm hearing is we just don't get caught next time

"We just moved here and you two already had to go off causing trouble?" Daniel glared both of us down, his honey colored eyes intimidating for a human. I just crossed my arms over my chest but Conner seemed to be testing how far into the couch cushions he could sink.
"What are we gonna do with you both?" Ava questioned, shaking her head but her presence honestly tamed the whole thing. Daniel was here, cop uniform with gun and badge, and Ava's attire consisted of bed head, a hot pink housecoat and bunny slippers. The last word I would ever use to describe her is scary.
Conner didn't seem to think the same because he sunk further, practically trying to hide behind Simon who was perched on his lap.
"You two lied to us and got into trouble while I was in the middle of a shift. We just got here and already I have to get a call about you two being detained," Daniel reviewed. "Which one of you came up with the idea to go to a party in the middle of the night?"
Both of our hands shot up without any hesitation.
His parents just sighed before Daniel added, "Someone could have gotten hurt, especially since you had other people in the car with you."
"I was the one driving and we both know I can't get drunk." The look he gave me meant that wasn't the point.
"Going to a party is one thing but getting detained?" Ava arched her brow, waiting for us to fess up and accept our mistakes. Her statement made me think something completely different though.
"What I'm hearing is that we just don't get caught next time."
Both of the adults gave me a sharp look and I saw Conner shoot me a look that pretty much asked if I was delusional.
She places her thin, pale arms on her hips, "There won't be a next time. You're both grounded until school starts." My lips parted to argue but Conner quickly smacked my leg, giving me a look. I huffed and dropped back against the couch.
"And that means no cars, no electronics and, if you two somehow manage to find some way to get to another party, I will ground you both until graduation," Daniel warned. I went to argue but Conner smacked me once again.
Ava put a hand on his chest and gave us a softer look, "Goodnight. I love you both, even with how much trouble you cause."
We both muttered a response.
Daniel sharply adds, "And that means go to bed. Both of you." Ava rolled her eyes at him and dragged him off to bed, the two discussing it as they made their way upstairs.
Their voices faded and then we heard the door shut.
"That turned out a lot better than I thought it would," I leaned back against the couch like it was a lounge chair.
"Only because I got you to keep your mouth shut," Conner pointed out, giving me a look. I shrugged and let my eyes close, the lack of adrenaline leaving my body as nothing more than a shell. "Thanks for not ratting me out."
I shrugged, "It was my driving that got us caught."
"Actually, it was just bad timing of that cop," he chuckled, "Thanks though."
I simply nodded with a smile.
It didn't matter how much of an annoying pain in the ass of an older brother he was, I wouldn't break our bond like that. Besides, he was right, normally I was the one dragging him into crazy schemes.
