A Few Days Later

Maura has a dream that she's walking down a tunnel with her gun drawn. She gets to a door and opens it. She sees herself in pajamas with a baby.

She wakes up.

Maura: Ahh!

Jane: (wakes up) It's okay. It's okay.

Downstairs That Morning with Jane Making Coffee

Jane: That is a very vivid dream.

Maura: Yeah. What do you think it means?

Jane: Probably nothing. I'm thinking that you're nervous about having a child. I am. I'm pregnant. My body is producing a cocktail of hormones. Right now, human chorionic gonadotropin is facilitating the production of estrogen and progesterone. Estrogen causes breast enlargement. It's also responsible for a lack of interest in sex during pregnancy.

Maura: So bigger boobs and no sex? That's my worst nightmare.

She tries to take Jane's coffee.

Jane: Mnh-mnh-mnh. I will kill you.

Maura: You should know that caffeine is bad.

Jane: Death is worse. Maura! It's decaf. It's fine. You have regular.

Maura: Mmm! This is good. Did you use the sulawesi?

Angela walks in.

Angela: Good morning!

Maura: Good morning, Angela.

Angela: Hey.

Jane: Hey, Ma.

Maura: What are you so worried about? You know, what kind of mother you'll be? How it will affect your work?

Jane: No, I'm afraid I'm gonna turn into my mother.

Maura: Oh, well, that's just free-floating anxiety. That's not based in any reality. Don't give in to it.

Angela: Are you guys okay?

Jane: Yes. Coffee's good.

Maura: Coffee's great.

Angela walks over and gets a cup. Jane and Maura's cellphones ring.

Jane: Thank god. Rizzoli.

Maura: Isles. All right.

Jane: Ma, we gotta go.

Maura: Um, you know, you should just
(she pulls Jane's hair back)

Angela: Ah! That's nice! I've been trying to get her to wear her hair back.
You should try it.

Jane: "Would you get." She slaps Maura's hands away.

They grab their things and go to walk out.

Jane: What do you call a nightmare that happens to you when you're awake?

Maura: That couldn't happen.

Jane: Just did. Bye, Ma.

Angela: Bye, girls.

Walking Up to the Scene

Maura: Would that be so bad becoming a little like your mother?

Jane: I mean, nuclear war is worse, but it's close. It's terrifying, Maura!

Maura: Fear is an essential part of our survival. It keeps us alert.

Jane: Oh, great. So, no caffeine in the morning. Just a big old cup of fear.

Maura: I happen to think that your mom was a very great mother.

Jane: Well, that's because you weren't around when she was doing the mom-ing.

Maura: Yeah, but I see the result. And I think that you're gonna take all the best of what she did and do it even better.

Jane: I'll try.

Korsak: Morning. The victim's

Maura: Hey, you look different.

Jane: You look good.

Korsak: Thanks, I think.

Maura: You're wearing a suit.

Korsak: Detectives are observant.

Maura: Who's the woman?

Korsak: How did you know the victim was a woman?

Maura: I'm talking about you and the woman you're dressing up for.

Korsak: Can't a man upgrade his look without a woman being involved?

Maura: I don't think so, no.

Jane: Well, usually, the male ornaments himself to attract a female.
Well, take, for instance, the sage-grouse or the quetzal.

Korsak: The victim's Susan Murphy, 38, multiple stab wounds.

Maura: She was out jogging.

Korsak: Robbery's not a motive. She had a $20 in her pocket, credit card, along with I.D.

Maura: What do you think?

Jane: She bled out internally.

Maura: It's a vicious attack. Maybe a predator?

Jane: Hmm.

Maura: What?

Jane: There's a slight crease, almost a burn, from friction.

Maura: Someone holding her wrist?

Jane: Well, looks more like something was ripped off her.

Maura: A bracelet? Jane.
She picks up a strap. "Could that be what left the mark on the victim's wrist?"

Jane: It's possible.

Maura: What's it from?

Jane: No, no. No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no. Over here!

Jane runs to the water and finds a baby stroller.

Maura: She was jogging with her baby.

Jane: The baby's missing.

Man: We're fine. Don't worry about it.

Maura: Okay, Jane, thanks. Let me know what you find.

Korsak: The divers have gone through the lake. Lots of tires and mattresses, a bowling ball, no baby.

Maura: Okay. They finished the line search of the woods. No evidence, no body, nothing. If you were gonna kill a mother and her baby, you'd do it here you'd leave the bodies here. T-taking the bodies away would just create problems. You got potential witnesses who see you carrying the bodies away, blood trails.

Korsak: So, if there's no body -

Maura: Maybe we're looking for a live kid.
