When Tak entered her house, she turned off her disguise, revealing her Irken form. Waiting for her on the couch was her SIR unit, MiMI.
"Mistress, where have you been? I was starting to think you were captured," said her worried companion.
Tak waved her hand dismissively, offering reassurance as she approached and took a seat beside MiMI.
"I wasn't captured or anything. I went to this human school to learn more about this planet. I was among our enemies, but there was one human who didn't seem like an enemy. I'm not sure how he'll react if he finds out I'm an alien. He doesn't know that yet," she said, pausing to take a deep breath.
"I met this boy named Dib Membrane. He seemed like an outcast—his peers made fun of him, calling him weird—but I must say, he's highly intelligent. That's why I defended him when his classmates told me not to sit next to him. I made conversation with him; my desk was behind his, so I sat there. We were given an assignment, but the lesson was incredibly boring. I endured it until the bell rang. Our next stop was lunch, and Dib and I talked on the way. We sat at one of the tables, talking for a little while. Then he told me he was going to use the restroom."
Tak's voice trembled as she continued. "Out of nowhere, his sister came over and thanked me for being his friend. We didn't talk much, but her name was Gaz. After she left, I waited for him to return, but a few minutes later, I heard him screaming my name. I rushed out of the lunchroom and saw him... starts to sob... being beaten to a pulp and stabbed to death by another human who apparently hated him so much. I couldn't let the violence continue. Just before the other boy could strike him again and kill him, I stopped him. Dib told me to dial 911. It's their emergency number. The paramedics and police arrived, and they arrested Dib's attacker. He's still in custody, but we're waiting for his punishment."
She took a shaky breath and continued. "I stayed with Dib in the hospital until he fully recovered. His family came by and thanked me for saving him. Apparently, his father is a very popular scientist, with the same intelligence as Dib. His sister came, too. After a few weeks of staying with him, I realized how long it takes humans to heal from such serious injuries. When he finally recovered, I helped him leave the hospital and stayed at his house. I even gave him some self-defense training. I couldn't let him stay so weak after that. He's making progress, though not quite there yet. He showed me around his house, and then I told him I had to get back here. So, here I am—back home."
Tak finished, her companion processing the flood of information. MiMI was slightly against her mistress befriending a human, especially since they were still on a mission to invade the planet. But MiMI wondered—was Tak really going to go through with it? Maybe she'd have a change of heart.
"Mistress, you realize you're on a mission, right? To invade this planet? At some point, you'll have to tell him your true identity—that you're not really human, but an alien invader. If the Tallest ever found out you were friends with the enemy, they could deactivate you and deem you defective. I'm not trying to make decisions for you, mistress, but I'm just trying to help and protect you," MiMI said.
Tak frowned and sighed, realizing how difficult it would be to tell Dib the truth. She had already felt conflicted back in the hospital while taking care of him.
"I know what you mean, MiMI. I just don't think Dib would betray me. He's too nice. The poor human doesn't even have any friends. I just feel bad for him," she said, her curled antennas drooping in sadness.
"For now, just keep being friends with him and see how things go," MiMI suggested.
Tak nodded as she turned on the TV, trying to distract herself from the troubling thoughts about the future.
Back at the Membrane household, Dib was cleaning his room when a knock interrupted him.
"Come in!" he called. The door slid open, revealing his sister Gaz.
"So, what's going on between you and that girl? I'd kind of like to know," she asked, still focused on her Game Slave, continuing her progress on the next mission.
Dib turned his head to face her. "She's just a friend, Gaz. Nothing more. I met her when my classmates were making fun of me on her first day here. They told her not to sit behind me because they thought I'd do something weird to her. Well, I didn't. Actually, I enjoyed talking to her. Maybe at some point down the road, I might consider her more than just a friend, but for now, that's all we are—friends."
Gaz lifted an eyebrow, taking one eye off her gaming system to look at him for a moment, then returned to her game. "Yeah, sure. You see her as more than just a friend, don't you?" she teased.
Dib's face flushed red. "We're not boyfriend and girlfriend! Get out of my room!" he shouted, stomping toward the door and slamming it in her face.
From the hallway, he could hear Gaz snickering loudly as she walked back to her room, shutting the door behind her.
