jealousy

song of the chapter:
can't remember to forget you - shakira

—— her

The week flew by quickly. Boring classes broken by shit talking sessions with Rieun and Sangjin and avoiding the popular kids whenever I could. Then I would go to the convenience store and work until Seona eventually cared too much and told me to go home. Then I would finish my homework, clean my room, shower, sit down and eat an awkward dinner with my dad, then sleep and repeat it all again.

Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday all flew by quickly, and now it was Friday. The bell to signal the end of the day had finally rung, and I didn't even spare Ms Jang's health class a second look as I flung my bag over my shoulder and waved a hurried goodbye to Sangjin. Friday meant hockey, and hockey meant a few hours of peace and time to forget everything else.

Rieun had chemistry on the other side of the school, so I was confused as to who had pulled my wrist ever so gently into a small, empty hallway.

"Haejin," spoke Jungwon's soft and honey like voice. I looked up, to meet his big brown eyes. "I've been trying to talk to you all week."

"Is that so?" I awkwardly laughed, scratching the back of my nape uncertainly.

"Look, if the kiss made you that uncomfortable-"

"I never said it made me feel uncomfortable." I replied in a small voice, staring at him with my head slightly tilt to its side. "It's just a kiss,"

He pursed his lips before they fell agape slightly, removing his grip on my wrist. "Yeah, it's just a kiss" he repeated, smiling slightly. "About the project, I hope it's not a big deal for you! If you need my help you can always ask!"

"It's ok," I said, trying my best to sound as happy as I possibly could. "I've almost finished with it anyways," I lied smoothly.

He grinned. "Well, I've got to talk to my English teacher quickly before practice, I'll catch you later!" he waved me off, walking back.

"Yeah, see you!" I said back. I exhaled sharply, letting out a breath I didn't know had filled my lungs. My cheeks were hot and my fingers were sweaty. Weird.

I took another deep breath before turning on my heels and heading to hockey practice.

—— him

I took a big sip from my water bottle as I sat on the bench after football practice. I was sweating, but I was lucky enough to not stink as much as the other guys. Especially the guys from JYP High.

So many girls had followed them into practice that it had taken all of Coach Min's effort to get them out. I grinned. They were good looking, but not as good looking as me.

And then I remembered my encounter with Jeong Haejin earlier. She was one special person. Unreadable, yet readable in the same way. I shouldn't have kissed her, but if she didn't care that much then why was I worrying? Why couldn't I rip my eyes away from her every time she walked past? Why would she look away every time I tried to get her attention?

Her and Rieun weren't like the other girls in our school. Everyone seemed to know and care about my parents and their influence. The other girls would squeal and giggle every time they saw me, something that I liked, but Rieun and Haejin never did. Something that pissed me off, especially Haejin.

My parents have always expected big things from me. Ever since I expressed my true feelings and my wish on not pursuing acting, they've been hoping I'd take up business. But the truth is, I don't know what I want to do.

My attention was caught from the guys lining up at the fence. I walked over, standing next to Riki, I wondered why they were all lining up here?

The answer to my question was answered as I saw the girls hockey team collecting the cones and talking at the end of practice. The guys from JYP High were completely whipped, and I smirked. "I bet they don't make them like this at your school?"

Chan, the captain of the JYP High football team looked at me then back at the girls. "They certainly don't," he said, and grinned.

"The JYP High Memorial Ball is being hosted soon, right?" Riki asked, and Felix nodded. "Next week."

Ms Park had talked about it at homeroom on Monday. Whenever we hosted another school, we would always organise a celebratory ball in order to honour the other school. This year, it would be on the first week of October.

"You guys got partners yet?" Riki asked, and I whipped my head around to face the other guys. Some of them nodded, some didn't. Partners weren't mandatory, but they were fun.

"I don't, but that one over there looks pretty hot" said Hyunjin, running a hand through his slightly overgrown locks.

"Who?" Riki asked, eyes squinting as he tried to look at the person whom Hyunjin was referring to. I followed Hyunjin's gaze, and my heart stopped as I figured out who he was referring too.

With her shiny black hair tied into a loose low pony, her cheeks slightly red and lips still perfectly pink, it was no wonder Hyunjin had thought Haejin was "pretty hot." I mean who wouldn't find her "pretty hot?" Even I thought she was "pretty hot."

"Oh, Jeong Haejin!" Riki exclaimed, eyes lighting up as he finally understood who Hyunjin was pointing to. "Well, she's single, so you can shoot your chance," Riki said, patting him on the back. I poked my tongue in my cheek, hands slightly clenching into fists. I didn't know why.

Hyunjin smirked, looking around at his fellow comrades. "Alright, bet" he said, fingers combing though his locks before he spoke again. "Haejin!"

She looked up from her conversation with a couple of other girls, slightly confused. "Come here," Hyunjin beckoned, his voice booming over the railing that it caught the attention of the other girls as well.

Rieun said something to Haejin, and Haejin just shrugged before walking over, arms folded across her chest. "What do you want?" she yelled out.

"Do you want to be my date to the ball next week?" Hyunjin smoothly asked. A few girls giggled and hit Haejin jokingly on her arm as she blushed and smiled shyly. "Yeah, sure!" she finally said, and Hyunjin smirked. "See you next week!"

And I didn't know why, but it felt like my heart had been broken. I laughed along, trying to cover up the pain. And the fact that I was extremely jealous.
