THE NEXT THREE days of school passed by so quickly. We were loaded with mounts of homework, and my desk at home was slowly starting to get more and more crowded with books and sheets.

Today was Friday, thank goodness, but it also was the day of sports trials. Fortunately for me, Rieun was also trying out for hockey.

Hockey was my favourite sport. I had fell in love with it since I had moved to Seoul. I would even go as far to say that I was quite good at it, seeing as I had played it during middle and high school. Hockey was my second favourite thing after silk sheets.

"You ready?" Rieun asked. We were standing amongst a large crowd of girls on the hockey field, dressed in our schools navy blue and white sports gear. Shin pads and mouth guards equiped, hockey sticks at the ready. The school was empty, seeing at it was just four o'clock. The sun shone brightly, making us sweat even more.

"Of course I am." I said, head titled upwards slightly in an attempt to make myself look more confident.

A whistle blew, and all the girls on the hockey field scooted together closer. A large lady with hair tied securely into a baseball camp asserted herself in front of us.

"I'm Coach Seo, and I'll be coaching and taking the trainings for the Sangang girls hockey team."

She split us up into our positions. Rieun and I were on opposite teams though, but I didn't let it bother me. I was striker for my team. I looked at the other team carefully. Seorin was also the striker.

And with a sharp whistle, the tryouts began.

I scored the first goal.

Seorin scored the next.

Rieun scored the one after.

It was now down to the final minute. I was still trying to catch my breath, but the ball had been passed to me, and I had to make the goal.

All my other teammates were being marked, so I knew that I had to make a run for it.

My palms began to perspire and my calf muscles felt stiff after doing all that running. I took deep breathes, trying not to panic.

Just then, a figure came up beside me. It was Seorin. I tried to avoid her, but she was too fast. In an attempt to steal the ball of me, she hit my ankle with her hockey stick. I fell to the ground, landing right on my butt.

"Sorry," she said, her expression apologetic but her eyes twinkling with glee. "Better watch where you're going."

Seorin scored the last goal.

It was a tiring two hours of physical exertion, and I believe we were all relieved when Coach Seo summoned us around after she had taken 15 minutes to discuss with a few other coaches about the hockey team.

"Thank you all for trying out," she said, standing with her hands on her hips. "Only the top eleven girls have made the cut. If I say your name, please step forward and collect a jersey."

I could hear my heart thumping in my chest. I nervously bit down on my bottom lip, praying for all odds to be on my side.

"Kwon Rieun."

I looked towards Rieun, who just sat there with her jaw open in shock. She flashed me a smile as she ran up to the front.

"Jang Hira."

"Jang Chaeri."

"Kim Yoojin."

"Kwon Juhi."

"Lee Hyeri."

"Son Haeun."

"Park Dayeon."

"Yoo Sera."

"Jeong Haejin."

I couldn't believe it. Did she really call my name? My gaze met Rieun, who looked at me happily and excitedly. I had! I ran up with a big grin painted on my face, eyes transforming into small semi circles. I shook Coach Seo's hand and ran to collect my jersey.

Rieun took both my hands and we jumped up in down like we were little girls. We were so happy, I didn't even know who the last member of our team was.

The girls who didn't make it looked upset as they walked away, some breaking into tears and others looking simply unbothered.

Coach Seo came up to us, a big smile beaming on her face. "Well done, girls! Now, before I dismiss you, I'd like to announce your team captain and vice captain."

The air fell silent once again, and I gulped. It probably wouldn't be me, seeing as I was the new girl. I just hoped it was Rieun.

"The vice captain on the Sangang girls hockey team is... Jang Hira! Congratulations!" announced Coach Seo, and a tall girl with a lean figure shyly smiled around at the rest of us. Hira was in her last year of high school, and according to Rieun, she was probably the best hockey player in the school.

Coach Seo waited until the excitement had died down before speaking again.

"And the captain of the Sangang girls hockey team for this season is... Kim Seorin!"

Everyone burst into claps, and I hesitantly clapped along with them. Rieun didn't clap at all. I saw the smug looks Seorin shot the pair of us, and frowned. This was not going to end up good.

This was not going to end up good
