Aurelia

I showed my friend the black diamond at the mall. I got it from my so-called parents. I was so happy. I am a hybrid of a Poona, vampire, and werewolf. It's wild!

I couldn't help but notice the irony. I learned I was a half-vampire from my parents. Life had thrown me a curveball.

Glancing at my friend Jia, I saw her lost in her phone, scrolling through her crush's Instagram. Mia Santiago, the new girl, caught Jia's attention in the past two weeks. I wished Jia would muster up the courage to open up to Mia and ask her out. They would make such a sweet couple.

I couldn't help but think about my recent breakup with my girlfriend, Bree. I want her back, but I'm scared of commitment. Should I message her on my birthday?

While sipping my milkshake, I scanned the mall for stores to shop for school clothes. I saw Bree and Mia cuddled at the Ralph Lauren store.

My heart sank at that moment. The perfect birthday I had envisioned crumbled before me. It felt like a cruel twist of fate. I wanted a happy celebration and a fresh start with Bree, but it felt taken away.

As I looked at them through the window, my emotions overwhelmed me. After slamming my drink on the table, Onlookers stared at me like I was crazy as I caught their attention. My best friend Jia reached out, placing her hand on my arm with a worried expression.

"Are you okay, Aurelia?" she asked, her voice filled with concern. I cleared my throat, trying to compose myself. "Um..." I stammered, struggling to find the right words.

"I'm afraid I have bad news for both of us, Jia," I finally managed to say, looking down at the ground. Jia's face turned from confusion to worry. "What? I thought we were enjoying your birthday so far?" she asked, her voice laced with genuine concern.

"Well, I was until I saw my ex-girlfriend Bree with Mia!" I yelled, my anger seething through my words. Jia, in an unexpected reaction, burst into laughter. Her giggles echoed through the mall as tears streamed down her face. Confused, I looked at her, unable to comprehend her response.

"No way! Brianna was with Mia?" Jia managed to say between breathless chuckles. She wiped away the remnants of her tears, but her face still held an incredulous expression. I pointed towards the Lauren Ralph store, my frustration mounting. Jia stopped laughing. Her soda slipped from her hand and crashed to the ground.

"How...can this be? Brianna Brown likes you," Jia whispered, her eyes welling up with tears. My heart sank as I realized the implications of what I had seen. "Well, she does not anymore," I said, my voice filled with determination. I pointed once again towards Bree and Mia, my resolve strengthening. "I will do everything in my power to break them up. Bree is mine alone."

As Jia and I rode on the Lyft back to my house, my mind was still consumed with thoughts of how to make Bree break up with Mia. I knew it was wrong, but Bree was the first person who understood me.

I felt perplexed and annoyed by how Mia, a music nerd, had caught Bree's interest, a fit and voluptuous athlete. The birthday enthusiasm faded as we exited the Lyft and proceeded to my front door. Opening the door revealed a dark, silent home.

"Entering the room, the lights switched on, revealing a crowd who shouted, "Surprise!" Confetti rained down on me, and my heart swelled with joy. My classmates and their families all came to celebrate with me.

It couldn't have been more perfect. I looked over at Jia, who patted my back and smiled, her eyes filled with a knowing look. She pulled me closer and whispered, "Do not do anything reckless, Aurelia," before letting me go. It was as if she sensed my plans involving Bree.

As I walked around the house, I stopped in my tracks.  He sat in a big chair and amazed me. He was handsome, like those vampire lads from movies and TV that attract calm girls. Given my concealed nature, I wondered whether he was one of my kind, even if it seemed implausible.

I got so excited to see him get up and wish me a Happy birthday. A surge of happiness washed over me. In a moment of impulsiveness, I asked him, "Would you be my boyfriend?" Anticipation hung in the air as I awaited his reply.

He ended the night by saying, "I don't go for chicks who aren't committed in relationships," and he walked away. The excitement I had for him turned into disgust after he mistreated me on my birthday. I didn't know that I would see him again.
