Kyxis marched me through the compound. Soldiers milled about, either grouped in squads or leisurely talking among themselves. No one gave us a second glance. The ships were waiting at the other end of the compound opposite the cells. Kyxis gripped my shoulder firmly, her stride urged me to hurry.

It was dawn, the sun was not visible, but the stars were slowly disappearing. The darkness of the night sky was fading, now tinged with blue and shades of grey. The base and its inhabitants were waking slowly.

"What happens when I make it to orbit?" I swallowed tensely. "Do you know where they're sending me?"

"No, I do not." She replied.

"Do they often send Syrans off-planet?" I urged. My heart pounded harder with every step. "What's the protocol for this? Where am I-"

"Shut up." She replied firmly. Her pace quickened.

"Ky!" A voice came from our left. Kyxis stiffened, but did not stop.

"What are you doing?" The other Syran who'd escorted Rem back to the cells jogged to catch up with us. "I told you I would meet you. You're early." He barely glanced at me as he strode beside Kyxis.

She shrugged.

"You were taking too long," she muttered. With the new Syran beside her, Ky walked in front of us. Her stride was sure, but her head swiveled once we made it to the ships.

"Is there a rush?" The Syran chuckled. He took up Kyxis' prior position behind me, urging me forward but with considerably less force.

"There doesn't need to be a rush," Kyxis snapped. "I have a job and I'm here to do it. I suggest you learn by example." Though I couldn't see her face, I could feel the impatience emanating from her. It was enough to make the soldier's steps falter.

"Ky, slow down." His tone was clipped. Ky finally stopped a few meters ahead of us, in front of a landing pad. The ship occupying the space was relatively small compared to some of the others, but aerodynamic. It was obviously not Tsosyran made. It looked similar to some of the human ships I'd seen in passing. It was black with a cone-shaped nose and two wings sticking out of the sides, their edges look sharp enough to slice through flesh. There were no windows or doors to be seen and, unlike human ships, there were no engines or turbines visible from the outside.

"Wait, this isn't the one we're supposed to-"

"Captain Kya Xemaya requesting access," She said firmly.

The ship lit up, hundreds of dots decorating the exterior like stars in the night sky. The engine hummed quietly as it lifted off the ground.

"Access granted. Welcome back, Captain." A smooth voice emanated from the ship.
