The woods were a wonderland that day.
The six of us, no parents,
Exploring like Lewis and Clark
As the sun extinguished its flame in the skyChasing each other with outstretched hands,
Darkness and flashlights became our best friends
Running feet through the grass, no shoes
Falling down rabbit holes, tripping over tree rootsPlaying hide-and-seek in an enchanted world
Screaming as we imagined great-horned monsters
beyond the protection of Man's Best Friend,
lurking behind the gate.
