Well, more like second, but I didn't want to take a picture for the first step.
First step: sketch it out with little kid chalk.
Second step: "scratch" on the colors you see in the reference if your using one. Keep sketching on colors without blending till the colors look the perfect shades. Don't rely on the colors straight from the box, and don't use black till the end. Navy blues and deep purples are amazing shadows, and they are so much more interesting than black. Don't be afraid to use random colors. Don't work on details too much; just try to get the colors down.
