I woke to the sound of a radio playing some country tune in the distance. My whole body ached as I dragged myself out of bed. I basically crawled to the bathroom and stared in the mirror. A pathetic young woman with make-up running down her face and hair like a bird’s nest glared back at me. I hated this woman. She looked so small and unattractive. No wonder Richard had left her at the altar. Richard. Richard Cummins. The man that I thought I would be spending the rest of my life with. Thinking about it now, why the hell would I want to be Mrs Cummins? I mean…think about it. People would have addressed me as Mrs Cummins. How awkward was that? I glanced down at what I was wearing; the beautiful white wedding gown that Mads and I had specially designed seemed to mock me. I had to get out of it. The shower in the corner of the room gave me hope. I just needed a good hot shower.

I slipped my bracelet and necklace off and gaped at the Tiffany and Co. ring perched perfectly on my ring finger. It was worth over a hundred thousand dollars. Did I mention that R.C. was rich? I mean, like, hold the phone, rich. It was a beautiful ring; however, I do like things to be a bit simpler. I wasn’t complaining about the size of the rock though. The diamond sparkled from the sun’s rays which were slithering through the closed blinds. The band was completely silver with a strip of diamonds wrapping around it. I remembered being over the moon when Richard had asked me to marry him. When he had opened the ring box to reveal the priceless jewel, I felt my heart skip a beat. I guess I just had to move on now. He wasn’t the man that I thought he was. I shook my head to refocus. I needed to get to that shower and fast.

Mads and I were luckily the same size in clothes as well as shoes so it wasn’t a problem finding something to throw on. I decided on a pair of comfy shorts and baggy t-shirt. I wasn’t in the mood to impress. I took a deep breath in and out before venturing out of the room.

The country music that I had heard before grew louder and clearer as I reached the kitchen. Mads stood flipping pancakes in a frying pan while singing along to the unfamiliar tune.

“Mads?” I said groggily. My best friend swung around with a comforting smile on her face.

“Morning sweetie, have a seat, I was going to bring breakfast into you but I suppose we can have it here instead.” Mads gestured to one of the bar stools and turned back to her cooking. I stared absentmindedly as she laid a feast in front of me. “So I made, pancakes with nutella for the topping, waffles, a platter of fruit, fresh orange juice , coffee is being made and some pain killers.” I scanned all the food and gave a small smile.

“Thanks Mads…I…”

“You don’t need to say anything more. I am more than happy to and you know I would do anything for you. He is a dick. Do you now realise why I called him by his nickname? I wasn’t being nice but you were so in love and so I just let you be happy so I was happy.” She sat down next to me with two steaming coffee mugs in hand. I gratefully took the cup and gulped a mouthful down, burning my tongue. “Slow down or you are going to burn yourself.” I sighed in contentment. “Oh I also grabbed one of those girly magazines where everyone just bitches while I got the ingredients for breakfast.” Mads handed me the trashy magazine and I flicked through it aimlessly. An article caught my eye.

“How I got the bastard back…” I began reading out loud. Mads gave a small laugh but motioned for me to continue. “My boyfriend of many years was always a very work-orientated guy; he was consistently at the office. One night, when he was working late, I decided to surprise him with an office dine-in dinner. But when I got there, I was the one who got the surprise. Spread out on his desk was my boyfriend and his personal assistant.”

“Oh my god, what an arsehole!” Mads commented shaking her head.
“I was obviously devastated and broke it off with him. It has been weeks now and I still haven’t got over him, what do I do?” I continued. “Oh it’s one of those advice columns. The woman who writes the column answers with…‘First of all Misty I am so sorry for you to find out that way. It obviously makes you think that the arse was cheating on you for years. Well he is not worth your tears honey. Women are strong. We go through childbirth for God’s sake! It is time for you to stop feeling sorry for yourself and time to move on. The best way to move on is to prove that you can fight back. It’s time to get the bastard back…revenge is a woman’s most dangerous weapon.’” I finished. I stared at the article for a moment just taking everything in.

“Wow ok that was definitely not where I thought that was going.” Mads muttered as she spread nutella on her pancake.

“I think she is right.”

“Who?”

“The columnist…why should I let Richard get away with this? What if he does this to some other sweet girl?” I questioned suddenly feeling my mood improving dramatically. Mads gawked at me and my unexpected mood change.

“Sweetie?” She whispered gently.

“This is it, Mads!” I stood up and slammed the magazine down on the bench. “I’m going to get Richard back. It’s payback time.” I smirked evilly, already forming plans in my head.

“Whoa, hold up. You are going to what?” Mads asked.

“Get Richard back. You said it yourself, he was a dick. I deserve to give him my revenge.” I clarified.

“So what you are just going to travel around Australia looking for your lost ex-fiancé?” Mads suggested in disbelief.

“Exactly.” I nodded.

“You can’t possibly do this alone.” Mads shook her head. I looked at her curiously and hoped that she was hinting at what I was wishing for. “I’m in.”

“Yes!” I screamed in triumph. “Look out Richard the dick Cummins…I’m coming.”
