Proud Father

You were expecting. The proud father, Liam, would never let you out of his sight. Every time you sat down too fast or you sneezed he would rush up to you and put his strong arms around you while slowly rubbing your belly in small circles. He sang to you a lot too. Mostly to the baby.

Today you two were at the hospital, about to find out the sex of the baby. Normally you would have found out a lot earlier but you both decided to wait. Thinking it was for the best until you decorated the nursery, having no idea what color to paint the walls. The doctor walked in and asked some routine questions. Liam answered most for you. She some weird cold jell on your bump. You gasped and Liam squeezed your hand gently.
“it’s okay babe! It’s just cold is all! Don’t worry!”
“here we go! Ah! I see! Congratulations! It’s a boy!”
You gasped and smiled! Perfect! You really wanted a boy ever since you were young. Boys were less tricky to look after. Girls were divas. Oh! Wait… He will have his sassy uncle Lou.
You looked up to Liam with tears threatening to fall but he had beat you to it. He kissed you passionately but softened a bit when he remembered it might hurt you! As if! He rubbed your belly in circles again.
“what do you want to call him?”
“No! Liam! You pick! You have done so much!”
“please pick! Whatever you pick I will love it!” this could be fun. Anything huh! Hmmm.
“I LOVE ‘Raspucha’. What do you think? Little Raspucha Payne! How about it!”
Liam rubbed the back of his neck and cleared his throat
“it’s … GREAT!”
“I’m only kidding babe!”
” oh thank god!” he kissed your belly ” I mean… Its a lovely name but I’m not sure… Maybe the boys… “
You cut him off with a kiss

You were just climbing into bed when the baby started kicking… But harder than normal… and more. You groaned as you settled down.
” you okay love?” Liam was clearly worried as ever
” yeah it’s just-” suddenly you felt a blinding pain and screamed! The baby started pushing down, wanting out, but it wasn’t time! Not time at all! You looked down and saw blood, lots of it, it just kept coming. Liam whipped out his phone and called an ambulance you tried getting up but just fell to the floor! Very soon the ambulance got there and set up. You were told to push but you didn’t want to. You couldn’t! He can’t leave you! He was your baby and it was your job to protect him, he was nowhere near ready to face the world! Natural urges forced him out, disobeying your pleading screams. When the baby came out two nurses examined him before simply dumping him in a silver bowl. You screamed, kicked and cried! You needed your baby. Liam could tell, as he approached the bowl though a doctor placed a hand on his shoulder and shook his head. Liam broke down in tears! The doctors gave you injections but you would never stop fighting! You will protect your child till your last breath… or… His at least. As one doctor shifted slightly you saw a very small, very pale foot hanging over the rim of the bowl, dripping in blood. You choked and lunged for your baby, your child that you had failed to protect… You had failed as a mother. You just managed to catch a glimpse of the tiny angelic face of your baby through the tears. The bowl looked freezing, not the right place to leave him. If he didn’t get a chance in life he deserves a chance up there. You held his tiny hand. The doctors didn’t stop you. You searched the room for Liam. The only person who could make the pain go away… Or at least hurt less. Your throat was shredded, your eyes were red and puffy and you had no strength left to scream with. You found Liam sitting in the corner hugging his knees and sobbing uncontrollably. He crawled over to you and placed his hand in yours. His touch warmed you and lit up the pieces of your heart. He smiled at you but you watched it shatter as he looked at his child. Never having seen his mummy or daddy. Never made it far enough. Couldn’t hold on for a second longer and slipped away. Leaving poor mummy and daddy alone. This was too close to the scene you had imagined, mum and dad smiling down at their child, holding hands, baby kicking and laughing happily in his safe crib. But there was no crib. Neither mum or dad were smiling. and worst of all, no baby.

You both placed your child into a warm shoe box, you couldn’t find anything else small enough, and wrapped him in a blanket, like you would do before putting him to sleep… A long sleep… Only to wake years later when his parents join him again. Liam put the lid on and placed him in the hole you had dug. You put a new rose bush above it and patted the ground around it. Liam rubbed the ground in small circles, like he had once rubbed your belly. One day not far from now… The roots of the roses will grow around the small box… Protecting him… The job you failed to complete. The boys all hugged you and walked back inside the house in silence. Leaving you alone with your baby. After a while you sighed and got up. There was one last job for you to complete as a failed mother…

You turned the key. Locking the nursery with the happy memories inside it. It was in fact a child’s room that should be full of joy right? The bad memories were drowned with a drink. Nothing more said.
