Chapter 52 - Routine

Start from the beginning

All that remained was to survive the rest of the day.

...

In the last class, he almost fell asleep on his desk, suddenly tired for no reason. If he didn't support his head with his hand, he would have already slammed it on the desk, and all the attention would be on him. Not that it wouldn't be otherwise.

When the bell rang, signalling the end of the day, he was more than excited and almost ran to his locker. He quickly threw all the things he didn't need inside, and without waiting for Angie, he went outside. He didn't want to risk running into any of his friends, or rather former friends, so he stood out of sight of the other students under the trees.

Not that today was on his side, since he was eventually noticed by someone who shouldn't have.

At first, it looked like she was just going to walk past him, paying him no attention, but when her eyes turned in his direction and her lips locked into a thin line, he knew she wasn't going to let it go.

"Bye, E," she greeted him, giving him a small smile that showed her uncertainty. Even though she was talking to him, she didn't stop, just slowed her steps.

"Bye, Lola," he said back, mirroring her smile. And there their conversation ended. She walked past him, and he turned to see her back leaving. It was something he had to get used to, he told himself. He didn't know what was worse, when they didn't speak to him at all, or when they ran away from him the moment, they spoke to him.

"Ready to go?" It had happened once again that he didn't even realize that someone had approached him. He nodded to his best friend, and together they went to the familiar bus stop.

Fortunately, the bus arrived on time, and the only thing left behind from Marwell was the flickering landscape outside the windows. Evan watched as trees, houses, and familiar buildings that had not changed over the years flashed before his eyes. However, it didn't last long, and he got tired of it, so he leaned against the glass and closed his eyes. He could finally afford to fall asleep knowing that Angie would wake him up once they were there. And she did.

He woke up the moment she shook his shoulder, and he automatically stood up and followed her down the narrow aisle of the bus.

"Here's my favourite demon slayer!"

Evan's heart was pounding as loud as if it wanted to burst out of his chest. He turned his head so quickly in the direction of the voice that he almost broke his own neck. And there he was. His mate, smiling at him with the widest smile.

He almost didn't notice that the raven-haired boy wasn't alone.

"Are you going to just stand there?" Michael asked him with a raised eyebrow, earning himself an elbow to his ribs from his cousin.

Evan couldn't help but feel his mouth stretch into a smile. Forgetting that he had not come alone, he immediately ran towards them. Ryan immediately opened his arms, and although Evan hadn't originally planned to do so, he threw himself into his arms. The black-haired boy picked him up for effect and spun him briefly before dropping him back to the ground and pulling away from him with a smile on his face.

Evan saw Ryan's eyes meet his, and for a brief moment, the happy look on his face was replaced by a frown. It was obviously still visible how he spent part of his day, but luckily Ryan didn't comment on it. Instead, he immediately started a conversation.

"Hi Angie, long time no see," he greeted the brunette, who her best friend had managed to forget about. Evan turned in alarm to find her behind him, but she didn't look offended. To his surprise, she was smiling contentedly.

"Hey, you two," she grinned. Michael returned her greeting with a nod, but he didn't seem to mind the presence of either of them. After all, he was the one waiting for them.

"Do you mind if we walk you home?" Ryan asked politely.

"You mean Evan's home," Angie corrected him as they had to split into two groups from Evan's house since they didn't live in the same direction.

"We can always take the longer route." He shrugged as if it was no big deal. Michael looked at him like he was crazy but didn't protest out loud.

"No need. I was planning to stay with Evan anyway. Maybe you can join us?" Although her question was directed at the two cousins, her gaze was directed at Evan as he had to agree first. It was his house after all.

Evan thought quickly, but if he wasn't mistaken or there wasn't an extraordinary situation, his parents wouldn't be home until a few hours later. He had no reason to say no, that is, except for the stress caused by his wolf whispering in his head that their mate would see their home for the first time.

"We can watch a movie?" Instead of answering the original question, he proposed a plan. And that's exactly how it happened that Ryan ended up at his house for the first time, but definitely not the last.

The four of them decided to have a movie night, even though it wasn't night yet. Evan spread out all the blankets he could find in the living room, made some popcorn, and surprisingly quickly everyone agreed on a movie.

When the movie got to the part where the main character has to kill his own dog to prevent him from turning into a zombie, both Evan and Ryan covered their eyes at the same time to avoid seeing it and thus discovered that they had another thing in common.

Of course, everyone immediately laughed at this, and Angie and Michael couldn't help but make a remark or two.

The atmosphere between them was relaxed, and if someone had told Evan that Angie and Michael would be laughing together and commenting on a movie, he wouldn't have believed it, but that's exactly what was happening. Apparently, they both had the same opinion about what was cliche and what wasn't.

After the movie ended, the cousins and Angie went home to avoid his parents. But not before they agreed they had to do it again, and Evan was more than excited about the idea.

He and Ryan said goodbye, but the greeting no longer included a hug, as they both automatically assumed that this would cross the imaginary fragile line of friendship. Instead, Ryan playfully bumped his shoulder, and Evan rolled his eyes at him. Something typical of him.

Suddenly, Evan was alone in an empty house, and although his thoughts began to haunt him again, he found the strength to fight them and didn't go straight to curling up in bed as he had planned at the beginning of the day.

It looked promising, but his fight was not over yet. From that day on, his life fell into a strange routine of feeling shitty and abandoned at school, then sleeping the whole way on the bus, and then his new friends from North Hallson were waiting for him at the bus stop. His whole life turned upside down, and the place where he used to escape from his home became his nightmare.

Before he knew it, another week went by.
