Imran's political career began in 1996, when he founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. He was initially unsuccessful in his political endeavors, but his popularity grew in the wake of his social work and philanthropy.
In 2002, Imran was elected to the National Assembly of Pakistan, but his party failed to win a majority. He was subsequently appointed as the Minister of Sports and Culture in the government of Pervez Musharraf.
