JIMIN POV

I've spent an hour on a scavenger hunt around the
vast chateau and I'm not even sure how long I've spent
cleaning once I found the supplies I needed.

But there is still daylight streaming in through the windows, so there's still time
for me to get some work done.

At least I have a relatively
clean place to sleep now.

I sit down on the bed with its pretty but simple antique
frame and run a hand across
the soft linens.

The house may not have
much left in it but what is
here is top of the line.

I could get used to living
like this.

That's not what I need to be thinking about right now.

I pull out the cell phone
they've given me to use while I'm in France and a list of subcontractors in the area that Jen and I put together back.

With any luck, I'll have this house filled with workers in
the next few days and I can really begin transforming it
back to its original beauty.

I dial the first number.

No answer.

I check the clock on the phone.

It's still relatively early, just
two in the afternoon.

We might be in a rural location
at the moment, but damn.

Paris isn't that far away.

I call the second number and have a quick but eye-opening conversation with the man
who answers.

At first, I thought he might be offended by my rusty grasp of the French language but that isn't the problem.

The problem is apparently
the men I work for.

Another phone call confirms
my fear, the twins have been blacklisted by everyone in
the area.

One contractor after another
tells me they're too hard to work for, too picky, too hands-off.

Most troubling of all is the repeated accusation that they haven't paid for any of the
work that's been done so far.

I'm furious by the time I hang
up the phone with the fourth contractor to repeat the claims.

What. The. Hell?

How is it that two billionaires haven't paid their bills on time?

That doesn't make any sense to me, but there's no way all of these contractors are lying
not when they're all saying the same things.

I have to find them and get
this mess sorted out.

I walk up and down the
corridor of bedrooms but
they don't seem to be in this wing of the house.

Backtracking from the tour
they took me on earlier, I walk through a seemingly endless maze of all sorts of rooms
big and small.

By the time I hear their
voices I'm nearly lost and out
of breath from rushing through what feels like a mile of
corridors and back stairways trying to find them.

"You're cheating." Jungkook's voice carries out through the open doorway as I approach.

"Not cheating." Guk replies.

I can picture the smirk on his face even before I turn the corner and see it in person.

"It's called skill."

"Admit it, You've lost three games in a row now."

I clear my throat and they
both turn to look at me.

They're playing table tennis on
a long wooden table that looks like it's at least three hundred years old.

I'm tempted to give them a lecture on how they treat the antiques they've surrounded themselves with but that conversation will have to wait.

Right now, there is a more pressing problem.

"We need to talk." I say, fixing them both with the most stern and irritated glare I can muster.

Part of me is at least a little satisfied to see their identical smiles quickly vanish.

At least they're paying
attention.

"What's the matter?" Jungkook asks, taking a step in my direction.

I hold up a hand and he stops mid-stride.

"I need you to tell me why
you're not paying your bills
and please just be honest
with me."

They both look genuinely surprised by my statement.

Guk is the first one to speak
up.

"We pay all of our bills."

"We have a whole team of
people who take care of that stuff."

"Your team is letting you
down." I say.

"None of the contractors who have worked on this house
have received payment."

"Where are the invoices?"

Both brothers shrug at the
same time.

"The previous firm was
supposed to be handling all of that." Jungkook says, his expression clouding over with each word.

"But it's no surprise they've fucked that up, too."

"I should have known better
not to follow up on that."

"We've probably been too trusting." Guk adds, his shoulders slumping.

"But now you see why this
place is still a disaster area
after almost a year of so-
called renovations."

I nod.

"You guys have been taken advantage of, Seriously."

"And you're going to have to make things right with the
locals or it's going to be impossible to get anything
done around here."

"My hands are tied."

"We'll fix it." Jungkook has
his phone in his hand and is already dialing a number.

"Just give me a little time
and I'll get everything straightened out."

I sigh and leave them to
their phone calls.

I don't have any interest in watching the brothers yell at their subordinates over the phone.

I just want the situation fixed.

At least they haven't been purposely withholding the payments.

That would've led to a
completely different conversation, since I can't
work for someone I don't trust.

And I trust them to fix this.

I just hope they hurry.

The clock is already ticking on this renovation and I'm going
to need every second I can get.
