PAST
Jimin likes bunking with Yoongi because he gives him extra food and doesn't yell at him.
Yoongi is nicer than his dad, Jimin discovers after 2 days. (He only knows it's been 2 days because he keeps track. Yoongi also likes to tell him what day it is.)
An older lady is shouting. She's telling Jimin off because he's got a tray of food. Jimin, who isn't good with screaming and is on the verge of tears, tries explaining to her that it belongs to their room. Nobody else is there when she hits the tray out of his hand. They only come when he gets slapped across the cheek, an accusatory finger in his face that claims he's to blame.
The ticket collector makes the woman leave and another one comes to ask Jimin what happened. He's distraught and crying as he blubbers through the story which the man must get (at least the highlights) because he says thank you, takes Jimin back to the room and promises to bring them a replacement tray of food.
"Jiminie, what took you so long?"
Yoongi is on the top bunk, foot dangling off the edge and humming. When Jimin doesn't say anything, he peaks up over his sketchbook and horror strikes his face. Jimin doesn't like the look because it leaves a heavy feeling of guilt in the pit of his stomach. He watches slide down and hurry over, his soft hands gently cupping the sides of Jimin's face.
"What happened?" he demands. There's a growl in his throat that surprises Jimin because he didn't think Yoongi would be mad. "Who hurt you?" His hand is icy against the warmth of his cheek where the woman slapped him. There's a small remnant of sting that makes him wince against Yoongi's touch.
"A l- lady. She said I was s- stealing the food," he whispers. Yoongi's only a slight bit taller than Jimin so when he's pulled in for a hug, hair brushes against the tip of Yoongi's chin. "I d- didn't steal. I w- was only taking our tray."
Yoongi makes him sit down, going after the ticket collector with a promise of returning.
He comes back a while later, a jar of cream in one hand and a big plaster in the other. The bed dips and Yoongi's got the cream open, index and middle finger scooping up more than Jimin likes. He takes a cloth Jimin never noticed and dabs gently across the cheek.
"Was it bleeding?" he asks because why else would the cloth be needed first?
"Bitch must have been wearing rings," he says under his breath. A bit louder he adds, "It's fine and it will heal."
His hand is gentle as he applies the cream to the cheek where Jimin was slapped. Reassuring words fall easily out of his mouth every time Jimin winces. Yoongi puts the plaster on and pulls Jimin into his arms.
One hand strokes Jimin's hair, the other hand rubbing circles on his back. He hums softly, chest rumbling as he does. Murmuring to Jimin that it's okay, that it's not his fault.
It's hard when it feels like everything is his fault.
*
The ticket collector brings them two trays of food as an apology. Jimin stirs awake when the door shuts and he opens his eyes just wide enough to catch the dark look in Yoongi's eye. One he hopes he'll never be on the receiving end of.
Yoongi must notice he's awake because he comes over. The bed dips underneath his weight and Yoongi's hand finds its way into the mop of Jimin's hair.
"How are you feeling?" he asks. His voice is delicate enough it makes Jimin forget about the look he was sporting only a moment ago.
"I feel fine."
"I've said it before, but you're a shitty liar, Park Jimin." He says it a lot quieter than the first time, like it's their little secret. Jimin wouldn't mind that, actually. He'd love having a little secret with someone. Especially if it's Min Yoongi.
"My cheek hurts," Jimin grumbles after a moment, pulling the tacky blanket over him when he shivers.
Yoongi disappears from his side and Jimin watches him. He closes the window and grabs the massive leather jacket he walked in with when they first met. When he returns to Jimin's side, Yoongi instructs him to sit upright and drapes the jacket over him.
It's cool against his skin and smells of coffee and dogs.
Yoongi sits down beside him and settles the tray on their lap. "Wanna watch a movie?" When Jimin says yes, Yoongi puts on a Disney movie and they dig into the food.
Jimin never asked, but he wonders if Yoongi likes Disney or if he put it on for Jimin.
