n. a moment that seemed innocuous at the time but ended up marking a diversion into a strange new era of your life-set in motion not by a series of jolting epiphanies but by tiny imperceptible differences between one ordinary day and the next, until...

We leave early the next morning. We stopped off at the bakery Marah's friends own and work in. We walked in and I ordered the coffee and a scone for Marah as she went to grab something from the apartment upstairs.
"So, you're the brother? Right?" The one with dark brown hair says, I believe her name is Sawyer.
"Yeah, adoptive." I mutter, waiting for Marah.
"She talked about you. Like a lot." Sawyer says. "Especially the first year in prison. Were you to close or something."
"Yeah, we were close." I mumble, seeing Marah come down the stairs, ending this awkward conversation.
Marah walks down in a long sleeve white shirt, a red, yellow, and black checkered skirt, brown heels, and I can see the outline of knives strapped to her thigh.

"Hey. You ready to go?" Marah asks, grabbing her coffee and scone.
I nod and walk to the door. I hear her say her goodbyes to her friends before we leave the store. We finish our coffees and Marah eats her scone.
"You can back out. If you want." I mutter, not looking at her.
"Now, why would I do that?" Marah asks, smiling towards me.
"I don't know. I thought you only killed cops." I say, smirking towards her.
My joke gets the desired outcome, a laugh passing through her lips. "That was one time!" she exclaims, hitting my arm.
I smile before getting out of the car. Marah follows and walks over to my side. I grab her waist and grab the briefcase that's set to the timeline we need.
We land in a rural and very polka town.
"This is not our vibe nor is it our aesthetic." Marah whispers to me.
I nod, knowing what she means. We walk inside the building, looking around for directions. We share a look, knowing this isn't going to end well, for either of us.
"Don't let me get arrested again." Marah mumbles, walking up to a woman working on a sign in the lobby.
"Excuse me." Marah says, tapping the woman on the back. The woman startles backwards, as if she couldn't hear anything over her heavy breathing.
