n. a moment that seemed innocuous at the time but ended up marking a diversion into a strange new era of your life-set in motion not by a series of jolting epiphanies but by tiny imperceptible differences between one ordinary day and the next, until...

I've been in Dallas for 2 weeks now. I can't find anywhere to live, as no one wants to pick up a young girl off the street, so I've resorted to stealing to survive. Luckily, all the training dad gave me is still useful.
I walk out of a rich house, where I carry a couple stacks of cash, some food, clothes, and shoes. Walking down the long driveway near the trees, I stay out of sight of anyone.
In the past 2 weeks, I've committed, robbery, armed robbery, arson, and assault.
I walk back through the streets of Dallas and walk to my favorite bakery, the one where I first find out where I was.
I open the door, walking inside I see the same girl from 2 weeks ago. I've yet to learn her name.
"Usual?" she asks me.
"Yeah. Thanks." I respond, grabbing out some cash.
"Are you new to town or something?" she asks me.
"Something like that." I mutter.
I grab my coffee and pastry and walk out, heading to my next location. Over the past 2 weeks, I've gotten more confident in my stealing abilities.
I walk into the diner, heating up my hands, I touch one of the seats far away from the registers. Once everyone is distracted I grab the cash in the register and some food before walking out as I let the diner burn.
2 months later...
It's been 2 months since I've landed in Dallas, and I've still not figured out where my siblings are. I walk into a high end boutique, looking around at all the fancy clothes as I slip smaller things into my pockets. I go to grab a small perfume, when the doors are kicked open and shots are fired.
I continue looking at the clothes as people start screaming.
"You could help, ya know?" yells Sawyer.
"I could, but what fun is that when you can do all the work for me." I smirk at her. I walk up to the manager with Sawyer, her handing me my gun as she grabs out her knives. "You are going to empty out all your registers and give us all the cash in your purses and wallet's in the next 30 seconds, before we start killing."
We hadn't actually killed anyone, yet. We've severely injured, but not killed.
I met Sawyer when I broke into one of the rich homes. I didn't realize that someone was home, or that someone else was stealing from there as well.
We had a small standoff when we saw each other. She threw a knife through my leg and I shot her arm. Ever since then, we've stolen together.
I'm broken out of my thoughts as all the cash is placed in a few bags in front of us. "Pleasure doing business with you." I say smiling, grabbing one of the bags.
We go to walk out of the store when we're stopped by a policeman in the store. "Freeze. Put the weapons down."
We don't move just staring at him, small smiles on our faces. "You want him?" Sawyer asks.
"Sure." I smile walking towards him. Sawyer gets everyone out of the building while I talk with the man.
"There's more men on the way. You won't get away with this." He says, sweating a little.
"But we already have." I frown. "Over two dozen times. Now I was going to let you go, but then you had to do something stupid, and be a hero. So now, I'm gonna have to kill you."
I walk around him in a circle, catching Sawyer's eye outside. She waits with the cash for me to finish. "Now, if you call off the cavalry and let us go, I won't hurt you. Don't you want that?"
"It is my sworn duty..." he starts, getting cut off when I aim my gun at his leg.
"Sworn duty, blah, blah, blah. You haven't been doing a great job recently." I smile at him, holding his side. "But don't worry, you'll go down as a hero I'm sure. 'Cop dies in a store fire after attempting to stop the robbers.' It sound's like a great story."
I walk away from him. Walking towards the door, I heat my hands up touching the carpet and letting the store go up in flames.
Walking out of the store, I meet Sawyer's eyes as I smile. "All done."
"Good. Let's go. I don't need jail time." she says sarcastically.
As we walk away, we're pushed to the ground. My gun and her knives are confiscated and we're handcuffed.
We look at each other, both knowing what's happening.
"You two are under arrest for robbery, theft, assault and battery. And you..." the officer looks down towards me. "murder and arson. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be given to you from the state."
We are walked to the cop cars and pushed inside. Neither of us say anything.
1 week later...
I stand in the court room. I was given a black plaid skirt, white long sleeve blouse, long white socks, black heels, and a black blazer to where.
We've been here for 3 hours now. The judge is now just trying to figure out what to charge each of us with. The only evidence of any of our crimes is our most recent one, we don't leave fingerprints, and even if we did, neither of us are in the system.
The judge walks back into the room, making all of us stand up, waiting to hear our sentencing. Everyone else sits but me, Sawyer, our lawyer, and the state lawyer.
"The decision has been made. Sawyer Ford has been found guilty of theft, assault and battery, and accomplice to murder. She will serve 3 years at Dallas County Detention Center." the judge finishes his sentencing for Sawyer. He picks up another file and turns towards me. "Marah Hargreeves has been found guilty of theft, assault and battery, murder, and arson. She will serve 5 years at Dallas County Detention Center."
Once the decisions are read out, cops come and grab me and Sawyer, handcuffing us and pulling us out of the court house, sending us to our new homes for the next 3-5 years.
'If only dad could see me now.' I think to myself, laughing a little.
"Well, at least we won't have to steal anything to survive now." Sawyer admits.
"True. Maybe we should have been caught a while ago." I say.
"Yeah, but we had to build up a reputation." Sawyer explains.
We sit in the car in silence for the rest of the drive to the prison. Once there, we are pulled out and brought into an entrance way with other prisoners.
We are led to the showers after they have signed us in and handed us our new clothes.
"Strip." yells a guard. I see some of the girls shyly taking off their clothes. I stand there for another minute staring down the guard before taking off my blazer, shoes, socks, skirt, and blouse off, leaving me in my bra and underwear. "Those too." responds the guard.
I throw the bra and underwear on the pile of clothes and shower, having not had one in the longest time. 5 minutes later, they order all of us to change, where they then cuff us once again and move us to another room, where we'll get our cell mates.
"When I call your name, you will follow your guard to your new cell." the head guard, whose name I can't remember says. "Martinez and Louis.... Smith and Carter.... Russo and Fewing.... lastly, Hargreeves and Ford."
Me and Sawyer walk towards our guard and head to our new cell. Once inside the door closes and I take the bottom bunk as she takes the top bunk. We lay there for a few minutes, before we hear the dinner call.
'This is gonna be a long 5 years. Time to cause some trouble.' I think.
