Air returns to my lungs as the chamber door opens, and I look around room, it's different than I remember. What really surprises me though, is that I'm not greeted by Peggy. Instead, a bald man with dark skin stands before me, wearing an eyepatch and a long black jacket.

"Where's Peggy?" I ask him as another man steps forward to remove the monitors and needles from my body.

"Director Carter has been retired for quite some time," the bald man tells me. "My name is Nicholas Fury, I'm the current Director of SHIELD."

"Why did you wake me up, Director Fury?"

"Well..." Fury pauses. "We found something that we think you might be able to help us with."

Another agent hands me some new clothes and I'm directed into a small bathroom, where I pull on the stretchy, black pants, and a SHIELD shirt and jacket.

As I exit the bathroom, I hear a woman's voice through Fury's earpiece. "All agents, code 13! I repeat! All agents, code 13!"

"Dammit," Fury curses. "Lieutenant Y/l/n, if you could please come with me."

We hurry through the hallway and into an elevator, where Fury presses the button for the parking garage. When the doors open, I'm ushered into the back of a black SUV, and I see countless other agents rushing into their vehicles as well.

We speed from the building and down the busy streets, finally coming to a halt in Times Square. I gaze out the window, mesmerized by the giant billboards and bright lights as crowds of people weave around each other.

"Please, wait here," Fury requests, stepping out of the vehicle. I look through the windshield to see Fury speaking to a man, whose face I can't see from where I'm seated. "At ease, soldier! Look, I'm sorry about that little show back there, but... we thought it best to break it to you slowly."

"Break what?" the man replies, his voice familiar. I step out of the vehicle.

"You've been asleep, Cap," Fury informs him as I get out of the vehicle. "For almost seventy years."

The man glances around in confusion, taking in his surroundings, and his face finally comes into view.

"Steve!" I cry, running to my friend and leaping into his arms as tears begin streaming down my cheeks. "You're alive! Oh, my God, you're alive!"

He embraces me before pulling back, stunned to see me. "Y/n? What— How—"

"How are you here?" I interrupt.

"I don't know..." Steve answers. "The last thing I remember is the plane going down..."

"You two have a lot of catching up to do," Fury explains. "But you gonna be okay?"

"Yeah," Steve breathes, looking between me and the city around us. "Yeah. I just... I had a date."
