Chapter 1

My name is Riley Caters, and I am sixteen years old. My family owns a business for making toys for kids. It is very prosperous right now and we are making big bucks. It was going very well until our business was robbed.

It was actually more of a terrorist attack at our business's headquarters. The terrorists were found next week or their bodies were. They seemed to have been burned to death from an explosion or by someone....

"Riley!" my dad called me from downstairs.

"Coming!" I hurried downstairs, skipping steps.

I saw my dad talking with a man around twenty. He was handsome... and strangely familiar. He gave me a smile as he headed out our front door. My father motioned me to take a seat at our table.

"Who was that dad?" I asked as I sat down.

"The man that will bring back our wealth." he gave a strained smile.

I jumped up, “Really dad? That is great! How will he do it?"

My dad hesitated, “He will be your husband Riley...he is currently your fiancé."

I was silent; did I just hear my father right? “He’s my what?"

"You're fiancé." my dad repeated.

"I'm only sixteen!" I objected.

"Riley." I shut up; “If you don't get married with this man we will be forced to live on the streets." My dad was deadly serious

I thought about it. My father expected me to agree because I was so nice and understanding. I did not want to understand this time. I did not want to be nice. I was going to tell my dad no. Then I thought about my mom. She was in a critical medical condition, we needed money. And one thing that I am not is selfish. “I understand dad." I forced the words out.

My dad opened his arms and I went into his hug. “You’ll always be my little girl." he whispered in my ear.

"I know."

He let me go, "You will meet him tomorrow after school. He will pick you up."

I nodded. What will my friends think?

"Hey Riley can I come over today?" my friend Angelica asked.

I shook my head, “I’m going somewhere today."

"Where?” she asks.

"I'm not sure."

"You better not be making this up.," she warns.

I smile, “I’m not."

She studies me,” Is it a date?"

"No!" I answer quickly. Too quickly.

"Hah! I knew it!" she grins.

"It’s not Angelica! It's not what you think!"

The bell rang, “You better hurry! Don't want to be late for your date!" she teases.

I look around, searching for the man, my fiancé. A hand lands on my shoulder.

"Let’s go Riley." a voice says.

I look up to see my fiancé's face,"Hi."

He chuckles, “Hello there." he starts leading me out of school grounds.

"Oh My God!" I hear Angelica say, “He’s sooo HOT!"

"Where are we going?" I asked my fiancé.

He smiled, "Somewhere special where memories will come back."

"Oh okay..." what does he mean?

"Call me Luke." he says.

"Luke?" I try to be nice,” What a nice name your parents gave you."

He grimaced,” I gave myself that name. My real name is a burden."

I frowned. He must have a complicated family. We keep walking until we reach an old grocery store.

"We're here." he stares at the store with shining eyes. His eyes were dark, his hair curly black.

"It's an old grocery store."

He looks down at me, "Don’t you remember?"

"Remember what?" I ask.

"The first time we met!" he looks at me expectantly.

"Ummm no..."

His face fell. He looked hurt as if I just stabbed him. Then he smiles, "Do you want a drink or something?"

Before I could answer, he is already walking into the store, leaving me no choice but to follow.

I know this store that was the first thought that came to my head. I though about what Luke said that we first met here. Maybe he was a bag boy or something here. However, I know that is not it.

"Do you want anything?" Luke asks me. There was something different in his voice. It was not as cheerful as it was, it was sad.

I think of ways to cheer him up, because I am sure I caused his sadness. I smile at him,” I would like an icee. I used to always come here for one when I was a little girl."

Luke turns to me, "Really?!" he gives me a genuine smile, "Anything else you may remember?"

I shrugged, "It’s hard to remember, I was really small you know."

He nodded. "Of course. You were just too young to remember." I had a feeling he was saying this more to himself than to me.

He bought me my icee and we headed out the store. I noticed he was more cheery now. As we walked out, I saw a homeless guy sitting down.

I took a dollar out of my wallet and approached the man. "Did you lose something special mister?" I asked the man.

He looked at me,"Yeah I sure did kid, I lost everything."

I handed him my dollar, "Well mister know that there are people out there that care."

He took my dollar and smiled, "Bless you girl."

I smile and turn around to Luke. He was smiling at me with a loving expression.

"What?" I ask.

"You did the same for me.," he said. He came closer to me, "I was once the guy on the street that you saved."

I look into his eyes and the memory comes back to me. Luke was the man I cried for when I was little. He was the man that said I actually helped him.
